Friends! Think pink for another year - LEGO is expanding the pink boxes with Disney princesses, but that's another segment. The usual array of sets are augmented by small pouches with pet friends, which could transcend the gender gap. Little penguins, apes, bears, tigers, and other animals come in a small set with a tiny habitat for a few bucks. As a kid I was always enamored with new animal pieces, mostly because anything other than horses was a real rarity up until the Pirates line started.

In addition to the usual fare - schools, horses, boats, beaches, eating things - the girls are getting a farm set and some jungle adventure-oriented kits. Developing lines like this is always tricky, given that at one point or another LEGO was largely considered unisex but tipped for boys, and then tipped for boys a lot. The added scrutiny for girl-specific sets has to be a hassle for LEGO, and it's nice to see them expanding beyond the traditional young girl play patterns a bit more. Perhaps City could get opened up a bit too - there's got to be more to life than fire, rescue, police, and bank robberies! It's a neat line-up for 2014, so take a look and enjoy.
