I had to find Hot Wheels Racer Verse Captain Kirk twice. One I bought and then later noticed the face paint was so bad, I couldn't post it here - that's pretty bad! I found a second one weeks later, and I like it. It may not be accurate, but hey, that's life.

Why? He got promoted, and the ship blew up. Captain Kirk never piloted this version of the Enterprise. You see, this is the "refit" movie version of the ship, which blew up in Star Trek III. Kirk was demoted to captain in Star Trek IV, and the ship he commanded was the NCC-1701-A, not NCC-1701. Yeah I'm being nitpciky, because if I don't, someone will write in and complain I didn't notice.

Does that have anything to do with the toy being cool? No, it's a cool little toy.

RacerVerse is such an oddity, as it looks like a kid's line but a lot of it seems like licenses are for old guys. The Nightmare Before Christmas is over 30 years old, but kids still love it - ditto with most of Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and the like. But Gremlins, Back to the Future, and now Star Trek are not known for appealing to the young - but a mass audience of adults, mayhaps. That's why it's neat to have a Star Trek red uniform Captain Kirk in a car shaped like the refit Enterprise, accuracy or no. I mean, where do you draw the line anyway? It's not like Starfleet gave these ships wheels, and this one has four smokey clear ones. And it seems to be working, as a lot of these little cars are supposed to be $6 and command higher prices online.

Kirk doesn't look too much like Shatner, but it does look like Kirk. The uniform and wig are pretty good, with a facial expression that doesn't seem too much like TJ Hooker, but it's probably close enough. The mouth, eyes, and eyebrows are printed on, and the hands are individually painted with a white cuff on the sleeve. I see no steering wheel, but elements of his uniform are present and very small - plus largely blocked by the arms.

The car looks a lot like the Starship Enterprise. Many modifications are made to make it into a car, with the body being enlarge and the saucer being opened up so our driver can sit inside. Elements of the ship were reconfigured to work as headlights, and the trunk is where your shuttle bay goes. The nacelles sit on the sides, with teeny tiny "NCC-1701" printed on them. It also rolls pretty well. It's not an exact replica of the movie prop, but it is pretty neat and such an oddity in 2025 where Trek seems to abandon ship at every toymaker except Mattel. We keep getting very few new toys in Hot Wheels every couple of years, but they're sticking with it while we see it leave Playmates, McFarlane Toys, Diamond Select Toys, NECA, Super7, and others. For a widely popular show, as merchandise it seems to be struggling in the 21st century - but at least the product that gets out tends to be pretty good.

We know other companies like Nacelle and Master Replicas are working on more action figures, but I don't know the full details on if they'll come out in 2025 or not - and technically, Kirk was a 2024 release. I'd love to collect a Trek toy line again, but there are so far that are priced like (or designed as) toys. This makes it easy to recommend this one. Check the paint closely before taking it to the register, and if you like what you see I'll say it's charming enough to make me glad I sank six bucks on it. I also might be taking a break from the format (plus or minus some Star Wars cars) as the line wisely shifts to things kids are going to want like Barbie, Minecraft, and Monster High. I still love these things, but I'll probably be pickier in 2025 just because much of what I want already exists and I can't imagine we'll see Muppets or Planet of the Apes or Columbo make appearances here. But if they do, you know I'll be tracking them down.
