Every now and again I get a sample-- this one showed up in the mail-- and it just sort of is timed nicely. This Kung Fu Panda 2 Po Designer MP3 Player comes in a world of iPods and other devices, so in some respects it's pretty unnecessary, technologically speaking. On the other hand, it does crib some of the neater elements of Be@rbricks, Mighty Muggs, and other figures and combines them with a piece of functional technology that actually fit a need I had while traveling in October of 2011. Specifically, I was traveling away from my desktop computer for over a week, and could not sync my iPod to the laptop without mucking up my iTunes library-- so I needed a way to get new podcasts after I ran out for the long plane ride home, and this did the trick.
This small player is a screen-free music player which plays a number of audio formats, although MP3 was the one most of the shows used. With 2GB of storage, you can get a lot on here, but since it lacks a screen you're basically at the mercy of the alphabetization of the player. The nice thing about this is you can take this with you to grab files off someone else's computer (as it works as a USB drive) or listen to whatever podcasts you may want, and that I like. I don't know if $54.99 is ideal for something like this, but the look of the device is one you can't really ignore-- it's a designer vinyl figure that actually does something.
Po is cute, not too cuddly, and the default sculpt lends itself well to this specific character, and most other creatures. This is not something you will want to collect-- but it might make a nice gift for anyone you know who does a lot of traveling and needs a way to listen to Marc Maron and can't necessarily sync their iPod on the road for some reason or another.
Po's paint job is pretty good, on par with Mez-Itz or other designer figures, and he features zero articulation. It's just a rotund, tall body with a big head and a nice paint job based on the Jack Black Panda from the movies. You can pop off his legs, and plug him in to your computer to grab your files. Drag-and-drop the audio, the player will find it, and you can listen to pretty much whatever you want. One problem though: it will not remember where you are in a track. If you pause it, it will power down. When it powers down, you will lose your place. Other than that, it pretty much does everything I'd want out of a cheap, collectible figural MP3 player. Not bad, but cheapskates may want to wait for a sale.
