I admit I did not chase down Hot Wheels Racer Verse Spongebob Squarepants - he came in a case with some other guys - but I liked the when I used to watch it, and the toy looked like it really nailed the job. For those who haven't watched any of the show over the last two decades and change, Spongebob Squarepants works as a fry cook and takes boating lessons from Mrs. Puff. This race car is modeled after one of the boats he's seen driving in the series, albeit with less paint.

It rolls well, it's chunky, and it looks like it came off the show - mostly. The non-removable figural driver is one of this line's highlights - the eyes, mouth, and cheeks are two-dimensional prints on a sponge surface, with a nose that sticks out. This will allow Mattel to use this same tooling over and over, with different expressions if they're so inclined. The face and the shadows in the sponge pockets are all printed on, which means he probably has more going on for paint complexity than any other figure in this series. The pants are visible, as are his white sleeves and a steering wheel that matches his yellow hands. Given the size and price point, I doubt Mattel could have improved on this driver. It's really good.

The boat of car is an excellent design, but light on deco. It looks a lot like the Boatmobile from the s how, which sometimes has numbers and sometimes doesn't - they opted for the simplier deco. As such, it mostly looks white with a black and red base. The motor in the back has a non-spinning orange propeller, a chrome chassis, and added gray hot rod pipes. Since the boat on the show has wheels, it won't surprise you that they're here too - but beefed up, with chrome star rims. It's on-theme for the show, and you get a blue windshield too. It's a satisfying design, but light on color - a red flag on the hood would have been great. It just needs a little color.

From the rear, the boar has more detail - you can see a Hot Wheels "swoosh" along with the various layers of plastic on the bumper region. I appreciate that the sides have sculpted doors with handles, because without them it would be almost completely unbroken smooth white plastic. And that's kind of boring.

He seems to be selling well so far, and it's probably not something adult toy fanatics are going to pounce on. Or maybe it is - the show debuted in 1999, and hopefully those kids grew up to appreciate a $6 toy car that looks like a 1990s Happy Meal toy with better paint and more heft. Comparing this toy to other action toys on the market, it looks pretty good. Other brands are starting to compete a little more in the under-$7 range, but there really isn't too much yet and this is currently one of your better bets. I don't think you'll feel you got a bargain on this one, but if you like the character I think you'll find it solid enough that you won't want to give it away.
