I got a single-carded Bugs Bunny in a case from work, but I didn't open it. Why? Because I found out that a Hot Wheels Racer Verse Marvin the Martian & Bugs Bunny was coming, and who doesn't love a cartoon character whose whole shtick was blowing up you and everything and everyone you've ever known? I found a lot of neat stuff last month around Christmas, because the stores were oddly not all that busy to the point of being almost eerie. Busy sure, but not the chaos that I remember seeing in the past. I was happy to find the set, and opened it that night.

The question I'd ask is "who is this for?" and the answer is probably old-school Hot Wheels fans who also have grandkids. Do the grandkids know these characters in 2025 in a post-post Space Jam world? I have no idea - but a retro-style rocket with an alien in it is about all I need to see to say "yes please."

Shelling out $12 for 2 cars is kind of pricey, but $1.25 for a single, basic car is kind of cheap. There are a lot of original parts on these, plus unique paint jobs you don't see every day - the mirror-chrome rocket car for Marvin has a gray engine with orange "heat" coming off the back, white wheels with chrome trim, and a red nose on the rocket - a feature on many other licensed toys. The funny thing is that this isn't quite as imaginative as some of hte other cars - if you look at other old licensed toys, this seems adapted from an existing style guide and dozens of other projects. But this time? It's got wheels.

The top of the rocket is chrome plastic while the bottom is polished metal. I would prefer it be all one or the other, but with the red wings breaking it up, it mostly looks excellent. The shine is great, and the paint on Marvin is very good. He has his red costume - the modern one - with white gloves holding a white steering wheel, plus facial features printed on a black head. Everything looks great, with a determined expression on his face. Could it look better? I think so - they seem to be using that photoreal printing technique, which results in some very thin detail lines over his eyes. A more traditional style of printing might show up slightly better. I'd recommend this set, at this price, just to get this car - but also, I make a lot of bad choices.

Joining Marvin is Bugs, who is also sold as a single car with (as far as I can tell) no changes. The car itself is three carrots slapped on a sky-blue chassis with buck teeth and cartoony rivets, making this look and feel like something out of a cartoon. (If it is, and I'm forgetting which one, I'll fire myself.) The orange wheels blend in with the carrot root while the green wheels blend in with the carrot tops. On the back are some exhaust pipes as well as the requisite license plate frame with a Hot Wheels swoosh. (Marvin's is hidden in his rocket.) The carrot car is neat, but it's not as cool as a mid-century rocket design adapted by some of animation's greats.

Bugs himself looks great. The figure is a bit more rubbery than other drivers, and that's a good thing. The ears might snap off without the flexibility, and this means his head can be nudged a bit so you can see the dots on his whiskers, his two front teeth, and his pink nose which tend to point down into the steering wheel. The eyes are clean and sharp, and of course he has white gloves on a white steering wheel. His ears are painted pink on the inside, making this a reasonable (and I'm sure, on-style guide) representation of the character.

Marvin's car looks like a fancy collectible - thanks, chrome - while Bugs looks like a kid's meal toy that has been adapted to fit a modern toy budget. They both feel sturdy and just heavy enough to feel like Real Toys. Given the price I assume the audience is going to be limited, but I really like them both enough to recommend them to fans of the characters and/or format. I'd go as far as to say Marvin is essential to anybody who's been picking up The Outer Space Men or any other whimsical older sci-fi toys, even though Warner Bros. cartoons seem to be seen as old-hat by the society at large right now. (They were huge in the 1990s, I swear.)

If you see it, grab it. If it's on clearance, grab two, someone you know will want it.
