I went from "no" to "yes" pretty with Casey Jones from Turtles of Grayskull. The character is fine, and a sports vigilante in Eternia just seemed goofy - and is goofy. His mask might remind you of Ram-Man or Shredder. His weapons bag is clearly a plussed up golf bag. But he's armed to the teeth, the new parts are all pretty good, and for $20 you effectively get enough accessories to outfit a weapons pak. He's got so much stuff, you may struggle to weight him down - and some of the choices are odd. I like odd.
As a character, he's low on my wish list. As a toy, he brings a lot to the table. If you need extra spears, or an axe you can swap out for a hand, or masks, or swords, or whatever, this is going to be your go-to figure and I assume if it goes on sale/clearance it'll be snapped up by customizers. It is not disappointing.
Like so many others, he gets upgraded with Eternian and Turtle tech - a shell pauldron, a spear, the requisite bracelets, the fuzzy briefs... enough parts are reused so he more or less looks like a new man. The colors seem appropriate to the character, but the physique and aesthetics are less New York and more Eternos. And his hair is pure 1990s, which is fine - but his eyes and expression are a little weird, looking like some Kubrickian poses we've seen in the news a lot in recent years. I assume it's meant to be a little unsettling, which is an interesting choice for a character who's arguably one of the good guys and is arguably going to wail on someone with a hockey stick.
The hammer might go nicely with Goat Man - and for all I know, he got revealed after I wrote this - with an axe similar to Krang's, a spear like Randor's, a glove like Jitsu's, and a sword like Ninjor's. It's worth noting that some stock photos show the figure with two gripping hands, but mine had one open hand and one gripping hand - so he can't use a lot of his accessories at once. They stow in the bag nicely, but getting him to balance with all that weight may take some effort. I like seeing Mattel play with the budgets, and this figure trades away armor and articulated bandannas for more stuff. And stuff is impressive.
The mask is a mishmash of Earthy and Eternian elements, and it fits in - and fits his head. I doubt it's going to be great for head protection, only face protection, but it looks cool. With some work you can pose his head so his eyes can see out the holes, too. It's a simple thing, but it looks good - sort of like how his boots are colored to look more like sneakers. The only thing that doesn't look great to me is the fact that the neck is blue, but I'm sure that's a cost issue and it probably isn't worth adding an extra deco hit or new torso armor pieces for just that.
There are so many figures in this line that could be summed up as "you don't need it, but it's cool" and this may be the best example of that. Mattel put so much into the figure that I can't argue that it feels like you get your money's worth, and you may want the gear to outfit other figures too. This is a very satisfying line if you don't have a full collection of either brand - it's a lot of fun ideas, recognizable characters, and generally good accessories. It just falls short on fun action features, but such is the 21st century where fun goes to die in most action figures. At least the design is appealing, and I hope some kids give these a shot. They're pretty fun.
