This purple Ram Man is a very big figure. It's not a deluxe like normal Origins Ram Man, who pads his price point with an alternate head and fist and a springy mechanism. Thus version of him has more paint and a lot more heft, plus a bulky torso subsidized by its use in the WWE lines at Walmart. There are a lot of new parts here, but it seems that the arms, chest, and axe are recycled. Not that this is a big problem.
This figure leans into the Classics interpretation of the character as a giant. He's slightly taller than his peers and, especially compared to other basic figures, much more massive. The body is largely a translucent purple with updated, spiky armor with lots of nice flourishes. This time they painted the silver spikes on his battle skirt, and there's a new ram skull belt buckle. I could see Mattel using this figure as a jumping-off point for an all-new "remastered" Ram Man for collectors, but he'd need a new head, the old hands, and new lower legs.
The main action feature is gone, so what you have here is a nicely articulated purple man with horns. Did you ever say to yourself "Gee, I wish I had that?" Probably not - but it's impressive. The silver looks better here than on basic Ram Man, I love the spikes and chain, and the deco is much, much sharper. My regular Rammy has a lot of silver paint slop. Both hands can hold weapons, although the left fist is closed - so your options there are a bit more limited. He stands fairly well, with a level of detail that's a bit nicer than the bulk of Origins. It's not as fancy as the works of art we got in Masters of the Universe Classics, but I assume you'll appreciate the pinless joints and mostly hidden articulation.
I am a little perplexed by the clear colorful skin with lightning bolts. I would have preferred a furry fellow, but that would cost more tooling money. I assume a lot of fans won't like this figure, but so far that doesn't matter as nobody seems to be seeing it in abundance anywhere. Heck, I haven't seen it in stores as of my writing this. It's such an odd take on a recognizable design, but you can't help but appreciate a lot of the little details like red eyes with black outlines, a silver earring, or horns molded in color. His purple limbs are light on paint, with silver bracelets and the aforementioned lightning bolts.
If it weren't for all the articulation I'd be singing his praises as a toy. His big fists have a nice range of movement, and look nicely exaggerated so that they may punch things. If this were a wholly new character I might like it even more, as I'm not a big fan of "we corrupted the heroes" as a premise - but it's one that tends to be good for business. (Locutus, anyone?) I appreciate that they didn't just take the original toy and make him purple - this is a bigger, heftier, meaner figure that could have been a simple repaint.
His armor also adds a little spot to store weapons, but it's a tight and awkward fit. The axes - both holdovers from the previous Ram Man - fit in there with some effort. They don't fit very well, and I would've preferred clips like on the Ram Man [FOTD #410] 2002 release. Still, they get the job done, and the hatchets can combine to be one really big spinning doom cutter of some sort.
This figure is sufficiently different, but I would've loved it if they took the same route as He-Man and gave him a new costume too. With differently colored armor, he'd be a whole new guy - heck, maybe that's why they didn't do it. He stands out as an impressive figure, arguably much more exciting and interesting than a lot of the other basic figures. If he doesn't suit your fancy, the wave also includes Raphael in Ram Man drag - which is also pretty fantastic. You probably don't need any more toys - I certainly don't - but this is an impressive beast of a man.
