While overproduced, the first year of Universal Monsters Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had figures as beautiful as the packaging wasn't. Mike as Frankenstein was the only figure from the debut series who matched the packaging artwork closely, while the others were sculpted or colored quite differently. At about 4 1/2-inches tall, he's roughly the standard size of a Turtle from this era and made from hard, glossy, colorful plastic. These guys are really quite beautiful.
Being based on a black-and-white film while portrayed by a character with green skin makes this mash-up perfect. Franky should be green, so it's good Michaelangelo is also green. Bits of his shell are visible under his shirt, both in the opening in front and the torn holes in the back. He retains the "M" belt and orange bands on his person, and has a nifty pose with his arms sort of out, but not really. This is a figure sculpted to look like he could reach out and grab something at any time, right out of the darkness. The bolts and other glow-in-the-dark elements won't let him hide in the shadows too easily, plus the traditional neck bolts are present. Understated, but present.
Like all figures in this range, he's an all-new sculpt and weapon variants exist-- the first series had all 4 turtles come with all 4 basic colors, so you could pretty much pick whoever you wanted. Given the first series was abundant on clearance endcaps, I chased down each turtle with his matching color, so my Mike has orange weapons.
With 7 points of articulation, this glossy figure really looks like it stepped off a cartoon. It's colored well, the paint operations are fairly clean, and the glow-in-the-dark adds a bit of personality to the figure. As a series, it looks great, and as an individual figure it ain't bad either. I like it, and I think you should get one.
Today this figure will set you back $10-$15, which is close to what a current TMNT figure should set you back. I'd say it's worth it, but you should probably.shtmlire for a collection of all 8 figures as it should be slightly cheaper.
