One of my favorite monsters meets one of the best turtles! Creature from the Black Lagoon Leonardo seems to be one of the best fits, with the all-green costume fitting nicely with a turtle shell that looks like it was designed for the original monster costume. The pearlescent paint looked different from almost everything else in the market back then, and the knobby skin felt appropriate to a marine creature mashed up with a marine creature.
In addition to the obvious sculpted detail, there are some fun bonuses like suction cups on the palms of his webbed hands. The mouth has unusual teeth which feel flatter, but have a decent amount of decoration. The red eyes are a real departure for this line, and the red lining around the gums gives this figure even more visual pop. I would say "they don't make them like this anymore" but the truth is, they just plain don't make them like this. If you want something this glittery and metallic, you're going to need some Monster Kolor paint and some skill. In person it's pretty striking, maybe I exaggerate a bit on the quality but it did look more lively than his cohorts in this 8-figure subline.
I generally opted out of displaying Leo with his gear. His fishy katana is covered in seaweed, while the spear gun and trident just never really sat well with me. The Creature always looked good without a weapon, and so does this figure. They're a nice bonus, and they have some nifty aquatic detailing like shells and other hints of ocean life, but the figure is actually just fine all by itself. Of course, seeing a shell on the trident and a fish swimming near it is cute, but it's a little wackier than the figure itself.
As one of the best figures in this line, it's going to cost you more. A figure without gear is $5 or $6, while complete and/or carded samples are generally closer to $30. If you can luck into a cheaper one, say $15 or less, I'd consider it an essential purchase in any decent 1980s or 1990s action figure collection. For $30... well, you can get a lot of toys for $30.
