The Masters of the Universe Sketch Book Series Sy-Klone was one of those figures that I thought just looked cool, even if I didn't collect the line. I waited for clearance (as you do) because each and every Target exclusive MOTU product has been marked down in the last few years. Normally I am a big advocate for expressing your support to show you want more of a line, but it would seem I overpaid for a lot of Turtles of Grayskull. Maybe you'll miss some, maybe you won't, but after your collection is big and diverse enough it doesn't always sting to miss out on items where you have a pretty full collection. In this case, I just missed his fingers - Mattel didn't squeeze enough plastic in the mold.
There is not Filmation version, and the toy version was exclusive to Mattel Collector, but hey - Sy-Klone! He doesn't spin, but he looks like an alternate universe creation, or maybe like something out of Super Joe in the 1970s.

This one seems to be mostly - or entirely - new parts. That's great! The limbs have more ribbing and seem technological, and the hands and feet match. The cybernetic torso has a lenticular disc that changes the swooshes from green, to red, to yellow. Sometimes lenticular stuff doesn't quite work, but in this case they didn't overreach. It's simple, and it works. The figure is mostly molded in color so again - it's simple, and it works. Articulation is standard Origins stuff, so your 5 1/2-inch barbarian pal can fit in many of your old vehicles, too.
The primary head is a very retro design with a blue helmet, red visor, and yellow highlights. With the money they spent not painting the eyes, they opted instead to give the lips some color. Good choice!
The second head looks like an overdesigned ancestor to the final yead with a blue face, yellow helmet hair, and in this case a ring around the forehead. It gives the vibes of a top, which makes sense - the original figure was all about spinning. I think I prefer the visor head, just because it causes this figure to look virtually nothing like the original Sy-Klone design. It's a lot like getting a completely new character! I like that. Fans, on the other hand, have been less receptive to wholly new guys in their nostalgia brands. That can be tricky given that Masters of the Universe in particular has a pretty finite cast of characters to remake until you get in to the under-powered one-off nobodies in the cartoons.
The ray-gun is another retro treat, looking a bit more advanced than the 1950s sci-fi blasters but not quite as fancy as the weird electronic toy guns kids had in the 1980s and 1990s. Given the lack of a big exterior ring or spinning mechanism, I'm really glad Mattel opted to include it. A figure without the blaster would be pretty drab. At $19.99, this was a pretty good deal. You got a new mold, with distinctive coloring, and a blaster for roughly the price of a standard mass release action figure. He looks weird, but in a way I find endearing.
Despite being a sold-out and discontinued exclusive, he's pretty cheap online. I assume more may be making the rounds at some point, but for all I know overstock a) doesn't exist or b) is in the hands of third-party closeout sellers. Don't pay too much for this guy, but give him a look. It's a lot cooler than your 20th Skeletor.
