There aren't a heck of a lot of classic characters to introduce in the 3 3/4-inch action figure line, but the collector's club found a few with the likes of the Air Adventurer figure. This is one of four figures made to mimic the old 12-inch fuzzy-headed guys from the 1970s, and the head sculpt is actually pretty great. Even more amazing, the body is all recycled parts from the 25th Anniversary line. The belt? First used on Flash. The upper torso? Wild Bill's. It's a great example of how you can really exploit the mold library inside Hasbro to get a lot of great new figures, although there are a few shortcomings.
For starters, the upper- and lower-torso pieces don't quite mesh. They fit, but there are some cracks in the seams, plus the texture is a little off. Also, the vest is something of an annoyance-- it restricts arm movement, so the figure can't sit in his helicopter, hold on to the flight stick, and wear the vest all at once. This is, of course, a shame-- but thankfully the vest comes off, revealing a swell red "Adventure Team" logo on the shoulder. (Why would they even hide this? It's awesome!)
There's nothing you haven't seen in terms of articulation, and the figure does have a removable belt. This is a good thing and a bad thing-- you see, the belt doesn't quite fit on the body perfectly. There's a tab on it which fits into a hole on the torso of Flash, but this torso has two holes in it and neither is centered. As such, the belt is either going to be hanging off the body a bit, or rotated slightly to the side. It's awkward, but if you leave the figure carded it's probably going to look just fine.
His accessories are nothing special-- the same weapons come with the other exclusive Adventure Team figures, and all kinda suck. You get a pistol, a rifle, and a backpack. Nothing too fancy here.
Wrapping up the set is a swell helicopter, a repaint of the Cobra FANG toy now in school bus yellow. Adventure Team markings adorn this ship, but other than those, it's pretty much just a redeco of the familiar black vehicle. The gun moves, the bombs are removable, and the blades spin. Oh, and you can move around the flight stick, if you're so inclined.
The whole set-- this includes the carded figure, the chopper in the insert, all that stuff-- comes in a cardboard box with faux-wood printing on it, plus a sticker advertising which character is inside. Some nice detail exists to be admired, but really, you're going to want to open up the outer box so you can enjoy the carded figure inside.
