Mattel Jurassic World Super Colossal Tyrannosaurus Rex Action FigureI was excited when I saw an early Jurassic World toy preview. Mattel took over this license and I would best describe seeing the stuff for the first time as obscene. Super Colossal Tyrannosaurus Rex is described as "3-feet long" but that's misleading. Once you plug in the leg and tail, she's about 42-inches from nose to tail tip. It's huge. It's not in scale to the rest of the line, and as a toy is sort of the equivalent of a jumbo Jakks Pacific figure with the ability to eat the blind bag dinosaurs sold separately.

It's the biggest Jurassic toy I have, and have seen. She's bigger than last year's Trypticon. The ankles swivel, the hips rotate, the arms move, the tail can be posed, and the mouth has two hinged pieces so she can open wide. The eyes are yellow and black, and the mouth has painted white teeth and a slick pink tongue. They even painted her toe claws - and gave her lighter color on the belly and darker on the back. It's like Mattel knew of the Bull T-Rex and the Gulper Prototype before it and said "we can do one better." Other smaller toys are in this line, but they can't eat your other toys, or hide incriminating documents.

The mostly hollow figure requires limited assembly, but once you plug in a few parts it's sturdy and huge. A trap door in the belly is pretty tight, but once you pop it open you can retrieve smaller toys. I threw in Glyos figures as a test, and sure enough she doesn't choke on them. I assume she could eat the human figures in this line that I do not yet have as of my writing this review.

The overall level of detail is good, probably better than your average Jumbo toy but not to the extent a pricey Chronicle statue would get you. But it's like $50, and ridiculously huge. The skin is soft in spots and hard in others, so that "real feel" skin from 1993 sort of made a comeback here. Long gone are Dino-Damage and the JP logo. You'll find a Jurassic World T-Rex skull on her foot, but there's no Dino DNA marker or anything like that for the apps. It's just a big, lovely toy.

Given where toys have gone - and left - in the last couple of decades, the decision to make a preposterously huge sturdy toy that can eat up to 20 smaller figures is something of a stroke of genius. If you're a fan of the movie series or toys in general, this is a really special something. Odds are scientifically-inaccurate dinosaurs will stop being a thing eventually, so this is kind of amazing in that we probably won't see a lot else quite this big and impressive. The loss of a major toy retailer means less real estate to show a giant like this to the public, so there's going to be less reason to ever bring back something this huge. If you see it, you should probably get one if you have the room. I should probably repeat that - it's so big, it won't fit on most normal commercially available bookcases. It's obscene. It's going to be one of those toys people talk about for weeks... or years. Get yours.
