I'm surprised they didn't cheap out on SG-Soundwave. "Oh, an easy repaint!" I thought. But no - Blokees gave him a new head mold with a sculpted-on green bandanna, plus some additional paint that was only on the "chase" versions of a previous plain Soundwave.
For those of you just joining us, "Shattered Glass" came out of the official fan club doing a "Mirror, Mirror"-style alternate universe toy and comic line with good Decepticons and bad Autobots. The bulk of the toys are recolors, and in some cases clever retools, of existing product. Soundwave started life as a fancy redo of Ironhide/Ratchet from the 2008 Universe line, before eventually just being a white and blue repaint of a number of Soundwave molds. Blokees' interpretation seems to borrow mostly from a Hasbro Pulse exclusive version from 2022.
Defender Blokees are a hair under 2 1/4-inch figures with, frankly, an absurd amount of articulation for the price. You have to put it together, but he has 14 meaningful points of articulation plus a jointed shoulder-mounted battery cannon. You can swap parts between figures, and these pose nicely with your old Battle Beasts. Soundwave is cast in white and blue plastic, with painted highlights like knees, shins, and of course his chest. The eyes are an inset green plastic piece, with a painted face mask on the helmet. Everything is surprisingly sharp, and there's a real ornate tape chamber door tampo on his chest. You can see the little red Decepticon face, the arrow, and the elements of the tape plus some reflective glare to boot. It's a lot more ornate than it needs to be. Sadly you don't get the various tape buttons on his crotch that the blue and silver versions had, but the knees and fancy legs do look a lot cooler. I think they made the right choice.
What's particularly fun is it's not a one-off and several "SG" toys are out already with Optimus Prime, Sideswipe, Ironhide, Bumblebee, Megatron, Rodimus, and others. I hope they keep going with it. I also hope we get some G2 guys, but so far they've been hesitant.
I really like this guy, and the whole series. It's taking me a while to open the whole backlog - hence, weekly reviews here - and I'm impressed. The Glittering Optimus Prime is stunning, Galvatron looks fantastic, and a Optimus Prime trailer playset deck thing is no slouch either. I'd recommend buying the case, even though I'm barely halfway through it. I didn't wind up with any of the other white Soundwave toys, so getting a small one seems like a good way to go now that space is starting to feel like more of a consideration.
