I love The Planet of the Apes classic movies. I wasn't of the age where they were relevant parts of a childhood, but I caught them on midnight cable reruns and loved them. So Cornelius, as a Pop! Vinyl figure, is one of the best things I could hope for. Maybe ReAction would be better... but hey, this is great! The figure is well-sculpted, nicely painted, and most important of all: cheap.
There has been no shortage of Apes toys. Hasbro, Mego, Medicom, Sideshow, and more cranked 'em out and the appeal of the line - one of the first big franchise toy lines - never quite captured the audience of the franchises it inspired. The 3 3/4-inch ape has an articulated head and not much else. It comes packaged in an untaped box, so you can remove it, display it, and put it back in for storage if you like. It's nice to have options - the box itself takes elements from the movie poster and feels like an appropriately timeless design.
Molded in green plastic, the figure's head makes up most of his girth. The arms don't move, but you can see tons of elements from the movie costume at work here. Leather highlights, furry gloves, and those shoe glove things are all here. How nice! A ridged brow is not merely sculpted, but also outlined to bring it to life - it really pops nicely with the extra paint here. The nose, mouth, eyes, and hair are colored in too to give you a figure that, while cheap, is a teensy bit better than it needed to be to warrant your $10 purchase.
Ever since their introduction, Pop! Vinyl seemed like a solid replacement for Hasbro's waning interest in Mighty Muggs and ended up as the finest gift figure line in circulation today. With hundreds of figures spanning almost every genre of fan interest, it's the can't-miss gift item for any season. I don't have them all simply because such a collection feels impossible to curate properly, but I got all the Apes. The stylized look means that things like accuracy and a perfect likeness are less of a concern, and nearly every one of these things is as perfect as quality control allows. (I have, on rare occasion, seem iffy paint on a few at a big chain bookstore. But everything I've got looks perfect.) I like it, I think you'll like it, and it's the perfect size for a desk at work. I wish they made more of these - I'd love a Taylor or a Brent or maybe even a Virgil.
