Rounding out the wonderful quartet of The Planet of the Apes Pop! Vinyl figures is the Ape Soldier. Any good sci-fi series has heroes, villains, and hordes of troopers in masks of some sort. This series had purple-armored gorillas as the muscles for the aristocratic orangutans, complete with guns. And the ability to ride horses.
This one looks a lot like Urko, who didn't appear until the second film. They wear pretty much the same uniform, except the officer has a hat and a tiny bit more armor. This one has nicely sculpted hair on his head, which is the only articulated part. Unlike most other Pop! figures, the apes have noses and mouths rather than just a blank slate with eyes, hair, and maybe ears. It's pretty simple, but that's par for the course for this line - if you like what you see, you'll be glad to know it stands up on a desk and looks cool. There's not much more you can ask from it. The painted wrinkles on the forehead really look great, and the jagged fur neck is perfectly nice too. Oh, and he's got gloves on his feet instead of shoes. Attention to detail is important, and Funko does a surprisingly good job for a company that could skirt the issue.
I wish this line continued - where's Zira, or Taylor? Since Funko will make a Pop! figure of dang near anything, I have to assume either the license got hot or it underperformed. I'd love nothing more than another 2-4 figures, because a Lawgiver statue or Caesar would be stupendously fun. Maybe even Armando! With 3 figures from the first movie and a single release from the sequel, it's a decent mix - they hit the apes you'd want, and they're all equally good. Get it if you like apes, it's a small set and won't cost you much.
