Every toy line needs its token "old-man-that-won't-sell" and the Simpsons has two of them, and both seem to be doing reasonably well. Grampa Simpson turned out particularly well, looking just as befuddled and panicked as one would've hoped for.
Grampa comes with two accessories (a newspaper and a magnifying glass) and has four joints.
The sculpt of the figure is excellent-- the head looks right, and the pose gives the character a startled appearance. (Take note: pose adds personality.) The glasses are removable, once again showing that Playmates isn't afraid to plunk down the extra nickel to make a figure a little nicer. The only thing about the figure that works against it is the color of ol' Abe's shirt-- typically, it appears as brown/red, and the toy has a blue garment.
The magnifying glass is done in an animated form, so unlike some toy magnifying accessories, it doesn't actually work. The newspaper is a white paper with a black wash paint job which sorta does the trick. It stands out well after years of "plastic toy with a sticker" accessories or just flat-out undpainted extras, something for which Playmates was notorious.
