Diamond Select Toys, Action Figures, and Collectibles February 12, 2012
Diamond! As a company that makes their own stuff, Diamond Select Toys has been getting some great toys out of wonderful licenses. New themes this year include Mad Monster Party, The Expendables, and of course the completely unseen (I couldn't even get a sneak peek!) Battle Beasts, presently expected to debut around C2E2. Mad Monster Party action figures were shown, while the Expendables seems to have a decent toy program including many (but not necessarily all) of the film's big action stars. Could it finally be time for the world to see Jason Statham?
Star Trek Minimates will return, sort of, with an Enterprise with two places to store figures. The saucer pops open for a Captian to sit in, and the body has an opening behind the dish. It's a nice design, but no photography was permitted. Minimates for The Amazing Spider-Man and Avengers are due this summer, plus a Santa Claus Pirate Ship is up for the holidays. Now that's a clever reuse of existing tooling!
The Universal Monsters will continue, as will The Munsters. Herman in his Hot Rod gear is probably going to be the TV figure of the year from this or any manufacturer, and a 2-pack of Marilyn & Eddie will be sold as a way to finish up the family sets which started last year. Odds are the This Island Earth Metaluna Mutant will be a hot seller if for no reason other than his Interoceter accessory, which may be of some interest to fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie. It's looking like a good year for Diamond, particularly with the addition of some Star Wars Barware.
