Mattel Masters of the Universe Classics February 12, 2012
I Have The Power! Mattel's Masters of the Universe Classics line is doing pretty well for something with zero TV support, no licensed push, and is driven almost entirely by well-to-do adult collectors. Until recently, the line has had few or no opportunities for an impulse buy-- fans had 2-3 days a month to buy figures, and that was it-- but now, they're offering He-Man and Skeletor all the time. (This is good, and makes a lot of sense-- who would drop $600 on a subscription without He-Man or Skeletor first?)
The line is continuing and some things, well, they didn't go as expected. Vehicles are off the table for 2012 as a large dragon will be occupying that slot, although you will see Sir Laser-Lot as one of the new characters contributed from outside Mattel this year. Other new entries include Snake Men as an army-building 2-pack, Frosta from the She-Ra line, and of course Horde Prime. For classic fans, the white Sorceress will be a shared convention exclusive, and will have Teela's boots-- not the Sorceress' boots-- on the final toy. Spikor should also be a hit with the 1980s fans, and for fans of the Star Wars comic books which might recognize a very similar character from the 1990s.
