One of the great things about the various LEGO fantasy-based minifigures is that if you squint hard enough, they almost feel like they would be right at home in early Final Fantasy games. You know, before things like creative costuming came into play. This Evil Dwarf is similar to other dwarves from previous sets, except-- you guessed it-- he's evil. If there weren't already Hobbit sets in the works, I'm sure these would be bought and repurposed en masse as the various heroes from that series.
Based on the shorter build of minifigure (which is the same as the normal ones except it has short, non-articulated legs) it's amazing just how much detail is on this figure. What's even more amazing is how much of it they covered up. The helmet and beard obscure one of the more ornate figures of the line, which you can see has heavily detailed armor with all sorts of patterns, rivets, mail, and other elements as well as a heavily painted bearded face complete with dark, sunken eyes. And when assembled, you will see none of these things. I appreciate LEGO putting more money into developing a figure, but it's kind of unfortunate to see it wasted in the figure's basic configuration. If you need a figure to buy to use as spare parts for your own creations, though, this may be one of the best on the market today.
Even his accessories are pretty ornate. A shield is covered in a swell dragon painting, with horns and snarling teeth. The Evil Dwarf's main weapon is a three-piece axe, which is made out of two half-axe blades plus what is basically a lightsaber blade, cast in brown. Nice! All together it's a pretty nice package, and for the retail asking price is quite the deal.
Get it cheap while you can! At about $2 on eBay, he's well worth the asking price. Your local stores may have series 5 figures left over, so if you can identify him from his blind-bag packaging you should get one. Complete sets of series 5 run about $45 at press time, which, at about $6 a figure, is quite good.
