LEGO hasn't cranked out too many "Classic Space" figures in its minifigure line, but they are trying to do more out-of-this-world figures like the Space Alien. Based on a new head sculpt from its recent Space Police line, this little fellow has a surprising amount of painted detail-- check out the black eyes, the stripes on his head, white teeth, and a red tongue. Back in my day, minifigures had two black dots and a grin and that's it. And we liked it that way! We didn't have these fancy-pants new head sculpts for our aliens... our aliens were humans with a brick for a head. And we liked it!
The body is a LEGO body, and if you don't know what to expect from one I order you to go to the nearest toy store and buy one (or more) LEGO sets to see what it's like. Pretty much the gold standard of tiny construction toy figures, they have articulated wrists, hips, shoulders, and necks. Er, neck. Just the one neck. This figure has a unique large green alien head on the neck peg, which allows LEGO to make new and bizarre characters using the same, 30+-year-old body.
Along with the Space Man and Space Pirate figures, these blaster-bedecked extra-terrestrials are a great way to get some cheap space action from the minifigure line. Then again, it might be cheaper just to pick up some discount Space Police sets. (I highly recommend the Raid VPR set.) If you want an alien and don't want to buy a large (or $6) set, this is not a bad way to go-- plus the green "skin" is unique to this figure, as the other releases are like grey and have a dorky cape. This purple outfit with a bunch of gear painted on his chest just plain looks better, and I think you'll like it.
