I'm not going to lie to you-- I was not excited at all about the prospect of a LEGO Weightlifter at first. Some dude in some workout clothes? And only one weight to lift? Dull. He has a fairly ornate outfit with bright colors, and while I can get behind neon green there's one feature I particularly loved about this figure once I got my hands on it-- the head!
LEGO began making more and more expressive figures since the late 1980s, with some even having multiple emotions expressed on opposing sides of the head. This one has only one face painted, but the little beads of sweat and clenched teeth are a fantastic addition and a great way for a toy maker to literally paint the emotion right on the figure's face. You can look at him, and see the strain right in his beady little eyes. I really like that. I also really like that you can repurpose this head for a LEGO figure sitting on the toilet. It says "straining" in so many ways, so why limit yourself to weightlifting when you can sit this figure down on the crapper and make it look like he's squeezing out a Count Dooku? (Give me a minute, I'll give you a poop joke.)
The figure's look is normal LEGO fare-- no nose, yellow face, standard articulation. His workout outfit is pretty interesting though-- on his right is a tiny 2x2 LEGO brick for some reason, and on his left is a replica of his weights. A little bit of yellow is splashed on his chest and part of where his arms go to further give him a little more skin, but the bulk of the figure is green and black. To give the illusion of shorts, much like on the cheerleader, some yellow stripes were added to his legs. A nice touch. While I wouldn't suggest tracking this one down for his own merits, this figure's head is reason enough to get one. If you're ever planning on doing a LEGO bathroom in your town, how can you possibly resist picking up this one?
