The Kimono Girl trades on America's love of Japanese stuff and applies it to the other thing we love chicks. We love Japanese toys, Japanese music, Japanese video games... so why don't we have more toy Japanese women? I have no idea. Anyway, LEGO decided to bring one of Japan's better-known cultural outfits with this release which has, I must say, intense deco. The paint job is exquisite.
Not content to merely decorate the figure, LEGO made sure to paint her hair too. There are some flowers and a ribbon visible on the top of her head, and her body deco is top-notch. Check out the various lines and folds, plus the patterns of flowers and branches. On a tiny toy trading figure of this size, mass-marketed to western boys (and collectors) it's an impressive specimen. Gold, white, and grey paint adorn the front of the figure while the back is much simpler, sporting only a little black and gold to bring her aft section to life. It ain't bad.
Japanese roles in toy lines are usually kept to ninjas or maybe samurai, but LEGO deciding to include a figure like this one really does beg the question "What's next?" We've seen women as cavemen and medical professionals, extreme sports participants, even space adventurers. I daresay LEGO Minifigures has more to offer young girls than LEGO Friends in terms of interesting role models, perhaps this one being a notable exception. As an ornate figure with a pretty face, this is a good one worth your while to track down. Particularly if you have a buddy who only dates Japanese women, this is a good gift for Christmas. (Some of you are laughing because you know these guys, some of you are laughing because you are these guys.)
