Now there's how you do a set. Masters of the Universe M.U.S.C.L.E. really knocked its second series out of the park, and I'm quite fond of this set - the new He-Man is great, Kobra Khan is good, and Stratos is also present. The distribution of characters is most sensible - people are going to want this He-Man to ride on the Battle Cat, and odds are you'll buy this set solely for him. The other characters are merely nice bonuses.
While one of the first figures, it's not like people are clamoring for Stratos unless he was one of your first toys as a child. But he's here - and most of the early characters from the line are represented as of this series. I assume more people might be excited for Kobra Khan because a) he was the first Snake Man and b) dude got some heavy TV advertising, what with his squirty action feature. This figure has no such feature - but the unique arm spikes, his gun, and his snake head are all here. His scales are sculpted nicely, plus his hands are nice and big. The pose is weird - almost like he's surrendering - but it could also be seen as some sort of intimidation gesture, not unlike some sort of frilled lizard. I like it. It's not amazing, but it's clearly Kobra Khan and all the important pieces are present, so it's a winner.
The centerpiece for the line is and always will be He-Man. He has to be interesting, and like Skeletor he was redone in a signature pose with a completely new sculpt. This time around, he's doing his transformation "By the Power of Grayskull... I have the power!" move. He's also pointing. I'm not sure why. The head is larger, as are his hands - but the sword isn't terribly big so that's kind of strange. His stance is designed to straddle Battle Cat, and it works perfectly. He has the haircut, the reasonably wonder-filled eyes, and the outfit is spot-on. For the curious, his bracelets are more in line with the cartoon than with the original toy. The proportions are a little iffy, but it's just so charming I don't care. It's great. It's He-Man. I'd love to see what they try for a third attempt, should one be made. Perhaps a different costume. I like it.
A figure I never much gave a rip about was Stratos, the sky ape man. The squat legs and giant arms look peculiar, as I'm not used to the visual of arms extending down to or below the knees. This one could use some revision, but such is life - it has the harness, the head, and the wings on his arms. The backpack seems a little too spread out, and it's missing the fins. You'll probably never see it once you display them, but it bothered me a tiny bit. It's still Stratos-y enough to be worthwhile, though... it's just not my favorite figure in the set. Th other details are very nice and the boots are fuzzy, so it's more similar to the cartoons too.
It's a fun set for the money. I'll catch Hell for this but I'd probably have just bought these and skipped the Matty line if both were launched simultaneously - it'd be much easier to store and handle these little guys. I'm hoping Super7 keeps it going with playsets, vehicles, and more characters - but I assume it can't go beyond a third or a fourth series. But I really hope that it does - I'm not disappointed by the set and they're just lovely little things.
