Utterly fantastic and wildly unnecessary, Super7's Transforming He-Man is a glow-in-the-dark gem that has no reason to exist. In the cartoon, He-Man doesn't so much glow as he is surrounded by lightning. Super7 is keen to do many glowing figures, so this is probably just a handy excuse to do this figure in glow plastic, and I'm fine with that. It's great.
The 5 1/2-inch scale figure eschews the rubber band and is a proper figure. A twist-and-punch attack remains, and the hips are actual joints. You can swivel them, you can bend them, and they don't pop out like some other MOTU-style retro figures from other manufacturers - this is a more solid hunk of plastic. He-Man also now has a Filmation-style head, which is a bit different than the old toy one, and I appreciate that. There's little paint here, just the shield, greaves, boots, underpants, hair, and some facial details - everything else glows in the dark. It's shiny, and he was changed just a bit from the prototype which had painted armor. Well, "armor."
The figure is a little awkward holding his accessories, but that's kind of typical with a lot of retro figures - and unfortunate, as the originals worked pretty well. Once you clamp that shield on his wrist, it isn't going to go anywhere. Similarly, the sword stays put in his fist. You can bash and fight, and that's a huge plus. I should also note that the glow-in-the-dark plastic shines fairly brightly. It's not Glyos-bright, but it's very, very good.
Now that Super7's line of Eternians will probably dwindle as Mattel's starts to pick up, I'd say grab these guys when and how you can if you're interested. It was a hoot to see a revival of retro He-Man figures out of nowhere, but it was a short one mostly focused on TV show characters. It's sensible - they should work well with a lot of the vintage toys, too, if you still have any. They might even work with the new Origins line too - there just aren't vehicles or playsets there yet. Here's hoping there will be, but for now, just enjoy this wildly silly and pointless figure. It glows! It's He-Man! What more do you need?
