If you bought the original version then you know what to expect out of the Alien (with Metallic Flesh) creature. The mold is more or less the same, except now it has a completely clear colorless dome, a very nice metallic black skin, and a wonderful white skull paint job that looks a lot like the original 1979 Kenner giant figure. It has the same sliding tongue, and much like the previous release it doesn't glow in the dark.
The 4 1/2-inch figure is basically the same as the blue "test shot," the clear grey pre-order exclusive figure, and the standard dark grey version release a year and a half ago. Replicating the original 1979 Kenner figure's metallic jaws with paint, this figure does a bang-up job of bringing you that very big, very old, and very expensive toy in a pocket version. While not untrue to the movie, it does make you look at the very same figure in a completely different light now that you can see what appears to be a nose and eyes in there.
With six joints, this is a pretty great figure. The foot holes are the same size as vintage Kenner figures, and everything seems to move without a problem - no broken joints or bad limbs here. Plus for ten bucks, it's just plain cool - hopefully Funko will continue to ship this one for a while, mostly because this feels like something that will go under the radar thanks to the somewhat lackluster feel of the second wave in that it provided no new characters, just new costumes. The sculpting of this figure is really helped by the shiny black paint, mostly because a dark toy in a fairly dark room can still appear like it has scores of ridges and ribbings, thus making it look arguably better than anything likely would have turned out in the 1970s or even 1980s. It's a tough tightrope walk to keep something both old and fresh, and I think in this case the choice of plastic probably nudges it a little too much into the "new" look and feel. Of course, I don't care, because it's awesome.
Due to how most of the early Alien merch was perceived, I would say this if the figure you should get if you're unsure which Alien is for you. The coloring is darker, the skill is whiter, and there's no broken promises of glow in the dark paint. Plus at ten bucks, really, you can't go wrong - if you have any genuine vintage Star Wars in your toy collection, you ought to buy this to hang out with them. Even if you haven't bought an action figure in three decades, this is something children of the 1970s and 1980s owe it to themselves to get because it really does feel like a lost toy from your past - and it's hard to not decree it superior to the last one.
