New York's American International Toy Fair February 21, 2011
Bionicle's replacement gets better! The first year of Hero Factory transitioned away from the long-lasting (and for a time, insanely popular) Bionicle range of toys and it seemed some fans weren't ready to make the jump. In 2011, LEGO seems intent to make the toys a little more exciting with far better heads and great articulation on these constructable action figures.
Rather than introduce a huge array of new characters, we're seeing Furno 3.0 and Nex 3.0 as upgrades of previously released characters, but with animal-like heads. Nex in particular looks like a saber-toothed tiger, and Stormer 3.0 reminds me a lot of some mid-1990s Transformers heads. I really like the direction this line is taking now.
As far as the bad guys go, the giant Witch Doctor is complete with a wacky skull staff and a skull-like head of his own. He's joined by Fangz, a giant beast, Scorpion, whose name pretty much says it all, and other new designs which should probably do just fine this holiday season. It's nice to see some more personality in these guys.
