Barlowe-tastic Legend has it that Power Lords came out of toymakers wanting to do toys from Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials, a 1979 tome illustrating dozens of creatures from sci-fi classics like Childhood's End, Solaris, and Known Space. Since these were novels, they weren't really brimming with illustrations so Wayne Barlowe managed to give a lot of fans a really good look at these creatures. Of course, when it comes to toys, licensing can be an issue so if the legend is true or not, making new characters made a lot of sense.
Amazingly, several of the original illustrations survived and Mr. Barlowe was on hand to show them off in a gallery/basement at TT Underground in New York City.

In addition to Mr. Barlowe's original illustrations, some entires from a call for fan art were also shown. Not too many, but a few really great illustrations were shown alongside some nifty 12-inch custom figures. Obviously, customized Power Lords action figures from the old line were a little ridiculous, while new ones were unavailable for the repainting. Still, check out what we saw at the show below!
