I dragged my feet on Scare Glow. I had my eye on this figure since it was announced but it was one of those "I'll get this later" purchases that got pushed to July of this year when I found it at Bookman's for $16, which was fine. The packaging was a little beat up. I have a lot of Super7 figures but none of their Masters of the Universe 3 3/4-inch figures, and I had no good reason to skip a glowing figure for under $20. The line was short. It was hot. The House of Used had closed. May as well buy another toy I don't need in a scale I probably won't pick up any more of unless I stumble on a deal.
The toy shopping world of 2025 is so wildly different than when I tarted to write this site, mostly in that it is outright unusual to find something I want in a store. Especially if it's old. The secondary market prices on this guy aren't high, but $25ish is more than I will usually do for something that's not a missing part of a collection. Buy-it-now prices aren't exactly low, but given a typical Super7 ReAction guy is $20 these days it's not bad.
The figure itself has a unique head, with arms and legs that look like Skeletor's and a torso that might be unique. I don't have all of these guys. The cape is a shiny vinyl sheet, riffing on the old Darth Vader/Obi-Wan Kenobi/Lando Calrissian/Jawa accessory with a twist. Rather than have arm holes, they gave it a neck hole - so it hangs off the head. I don't believe it can be removed without damaging anything, and it's a great design choice. You can have Scare Glow sit in vehicles without ruining or creasing the cape. It looks a little weird... but so did the other cut of vinyl capes. Comparing him to other figures, he fits.
Like a lot of Super7 ReAction Figures, he doesn't necessarily feel exactly like an old Kenner figure. But he's close. The pose is a little straight, but the hands and arms look decent. Functionally, he can hold his axe and he can fit in most vehicles I threw at him.
Detail is good - but the glow plastic eats a lot of it up. You can see a ripped torso, and the spiny arm things, plus the fuzzy briefs. The painted detail helps bring him to life a bit, but I don't know if this is something we'd have seen in the 1980s - usually they'd just sculpt a crack in the skull and call it a day. The lines filled in help show the work done on the design,
I found the unpackaged figure to be a smidgen sticky, so I wiped it off a bit. I'd say it held up fairly well, and fits in well with other retro style action figures. It doesn't feel like it matches any specific old house style, but I could see something like this coming out of another toy company in the 1980s. There are some places on the head that don't quite match the sculpted detail, but I don't feel it would be out of the question for Kenner or another company to do something similar. It can be a little off-model and still feel appropriate to the era.
This figure came out during a time when Mattel decided not to bother with He-Man. Masters of the Universe Origins hadn't come out yet, and this was the only affordable Scare Glow for a while - and it's neat. If you specialize in glow toys I'd recommend it, but I'd still prefer to stick with the other scales for building out a big collection. But for a small collection? ReAction makes a lot of sense - it ended, it's not a huge line, and the toys don't take up much space. For the time being I'm going to treat this like a one-off, but if I see any deals for $5-$10 I'll probably buy some more. They're fun, they're charming, they feel like they would belong in a Cantina playset. Maybe I'll get a Trap Jaw at some point. Super7 did a nice job doing its own thing here, and I admit a part of me wishes I went all-in on these guys - but that's a hoarding problem, and I've got Origins, so completing another line is just not going to happen. But glow guys? I will buy glow guys.
