I wish there were more of Hot Wheels Racer Verse. It's been a slow roll, and they seem to be selling to kids and casual toy buyers - and it's my expectation that these could be hot stuff down the road. It's just such a good idea! And this GremlinsGizmo is all about synergy - the 1985 movie is not only a classic, but it featured newcomer Gizmo driving around in a very Barbie-like corvette. Mattel has got to like that.
The non-removable figure looks like he's freaked out and having fun - or just smelt it. His ears flap back in the breeze, and the flat face sculpting could be repainted with a different expresion later. (I'd like to see that.) The face is printed very cleanly on white plastic with some brown elements, resembling your (probably) favorite Mogwai other than Dominic Aitchison. There was a figure kind of like this in the 1980s, but it's not like you can get it at a store or cheaply. Mattel did a nice job sculpting a small figure that is about the size of a LEGO mini man, and like the others his hands are molded to the flesh-colored steering wheel. That's kind of odd - but it's not like I would have expected more from a mass-market, low-price toy.
I would be interested in seeing a facial variant, but the figure is pretty good for the size and Mattel's style. Other figures in this line are usually also designed with flat faces featuring printed detail, which isn't quite as lively as the fleshy, hairy figures we usually get from other toymakers.
The car is molded in pink with pink and white striping, and it looks like the other toys and shots from the movie. It's not quite super-deformed, but it is squished a bit and it looks like a cute Choro-Q or similar car. The wheels have white walls and spokes - just like the toy from the movie - and it rolls really nicely. There's a clear plastic windshield with white interior, painted red brake lights, and painted silver headlights. There's a sculpted Hot Wheels "swoosh" license plate too, and when I look at this I'm trying to find some element to complain about. I don't think I would have done it differently - this is one of those things you're going to be mad if you can't find, and as of my writing this when I got mine back in late October he's quite expensive on eBay. Hopefully Mattel pumps these out for a very long time because I expect a lot of demand will exist for this toy.
This line is a gem filled with even more gems - this wave alone had Spider-Man, Marty McFly, Spongebob Squarepants, Darth Vader, Ahsoka Tano, He-Man, and Vanellope von Schweetz in the case. It's kind of a jaw-dropping assortment of pop culture characters, in a cheap toy format that is still pretty amazing even when a non-Racer Verse car is $1.25. While these are a lot like old Happy Meal toys from the 1980s and 1990s, Gizmo's car has a metal base, amazingly long-spinning wheels, and a good amount of high-quality sharp paint detail. I can think of no reason for you to skip purchasing this one if you have a crack at it. I work at a toy store and I bought the Hot Wheels RacerVerse 2024 Mix 5 Vehicle Case of 8 to get mine, and I think I may have seen the leftovers from cases in a Walmart - they go fast. I'm not saying to order a case from the place that pays my bills, but I'm not not saying to either because it worked for me.
