I really like the Hot Wheels Racer Verse line, but there's so much of it that I had to get picky. I would've paid full price for Wonder Woman & Batman but it showed up at Ross for $2.99, so I went that route. Normally these guys were about $6 each before the wacky price increases this year, with 2-packs being in the $12 range before they started hitting $16 or $17.

Batman is in a few sets, while Wonder Woman is available in this two-pack or, supposedly, as a single I don't think I've seen in the wild. The line is effectively Mario Kart but for every other license. It's kind of a shame these aren't all from a video game, but at least they make for some pretty great toys.

Wonder Woman debuted in this set with an invisible jet car. It's great! The base is die-cast metal painted silver, but the wheels and chassis are all clear colorless plastic - which I assume helps keep costs down. It's amazing how crystal clear it is, and I hope it can stay that way with time. The car has minimal sculpted panel detailing, but just enough that you can tell Mattel didn't phone it in. Heck, they could probably repaint it for another character and I'd assume it's a new mold.

The figure inside is fully painted, non-removable, and ready to get some truth with her lasso. The figure has her hand on the wheel, cape in the wind, and a surprisingly ornate costume with lots of painted parts. Since the car is clear, Mattel didn't take a lot of shorcuts. You can see paint on her bustier, her boots are painted, and many of those parts appear to be molded in color. This particular sample has a face which seems to have been printed barely off-center, but it still looks fine. She's expressive, and the toy has more personality than the card art. I love what they did here.

Batman is, for better or worse, the same in all of his sets. Singles, multipacks, track sets, they're all the same car with the same figure in the same colors. The Batmobile has eyes and, surprisingly, little paws. A turbine in the back and a big engine in front make it look super powerful, with Bruce's cape flowing in the wind. The wheels are big with a chrome finish, and the yellow eye headlights are a lot of fun. It's a good all-purpose Batmobile, but not super specific.

Wonder Woman turned out better, mostly because of how Batman was molded. You can see a seam down his face, which just isn't as good as the much cleaner visage on his pack mate. The eyes are painted nicely, the face looks nice and grim, and he has some comic-style shading around his cowl. It's subtle, but a nice extra. There's a Bat-symbol on his chest, but the hands on the steering wheel do a good job blocking it from site. For the purposes of races and track action, it's good and heavy. It gets the job done. It's just not amazing.

I was really surprised to see the price slashed, because these sets are really good and people seem to like them. They seem to sell well, and for the regular $12 price it seems to be an excellent set for a gift or for a kid who needs something to fuss with. Functionally, they're not much better than $1.25 regular cars - but with those figural elements? I like 'em. I hope they can make some more, because these are all really fun if you like the characters involved. Seeing how I found this for $3 around January and it's $15 or more on Amazon now, clearly, they shouldn't have marked it down.
