I - well, probably she who is my wife - stumbled on this Mini Truck while we were poking around an antique mall with cheap cars. I have a hard time saying no to a toy that's over 25 years old, in perfect condition, and $2.00. It's worthless, but neat!

The first Mini Truck cars came out in 1990, and was gorgeous. It had non-ironic pre-fame Jazz Cub vibes and is something I'll pick up if I ever actually see one. The car has an exposed engine and no top, and is notable for having exposed speakers filling the bed. Maybe it's just where I drive at my age, but I feel like new car owners with spectacular sound systems used to be a lot more common. I knew one guy in college who had so much stuff that it was hard for his trunk to stay up, as it was all mounted in the trunk door and was ridiculous. But hey, it's fun.

This model plays up a familiar comic book sound effect thing with words like "BOOOM!" and "KA-BOOM!" on it, which recalls things like the 1966 Batman TV show and the funny pages, without having to actually pay anyone a licensing fee. This was a common thing in 1990s cars - you'll see allusions to popular brands or trends, but nobody's getting paid. The cars still sold pretty well, and it makes sense. People love a cheap toy! These things were about a buck back then, meaning today's cars are a better deal when adjusted for inflation. Some of the paint is a little iffy on this one, but the process got a lot better as time went on. I'd still recommend picking this one up for a fair price - I opened it in 2024, and it looks as fresh as the day they made it.

Seeing the alternate paint jobs on this car reveals a lot of amazing ideas, before the car design was retired in 2004. Why they retired it I have no idea, it seems to me you should keep making these things until the tools are dust because every year is a new crop of kids in search of a cheap car. I was the weird kid who really liked old cars, which I didn't see much of in the 1980s - but I digress. This speaker-packed throwback is a nifty design that doesn't exactly scream for me to track it down in its red form... but gosh I do want that blue one with the purple stripe. Keep an eye open for older cars, if you stumble on it, it's worth the buck or two to own it.
