I found some of the originals to be very expensive, but weirdly anniversary replicas of the originals - now themselves 32 years old - to be quite affordable. The Demon was originally around $2, and at the right antique mall might be $5 or $8 today. Given the quality of the toy and inflation, it's pretty good - it's not real Spectraflame paint or anything, but it's nice.

This one originally came out in 1970, based on a customized 1932 Ford show car, and it just looks cool. The top is low and painted black, and it's lacking in generally fancy modern details beyond "brown paint." It's sparkly and looks cool, but today we've got tampos and anime graphics or Star Wars artwork. This is just a car, with red wheels and a chrome engine. All the details look pretty sharp, but I don't have an original to compare - as it is? It's good..

This toy is hefty, being made mostly of metal with plastic wheels. As time went on Mattel transitioned to more and more plastic in these toys, so when you flip it over and see the "25th Anniversary" and "Mattel Inc 1968 China" markings, it makes a little more sense as to why this one feels just the tiniest bit more "premium" than the average car. I also appreciate that the wheels are more or less standard wheels, and not some rubbery nonsense that couldn't win a downhill race if its life depending on it. These guys work really well as toy race cars thanks to the weight and lower center of gravity. And the nice axles, I'm sure. It's just a cool car and it's cheap enough that this 1990s release can probably be had more cheaply than some of today's "premium" releases... and I bet you'll like it just as much, or more.

I've bought a few of these Anniversary cars and I'm keeping my eye out for more. The bases are still shiny, the paint still looks good, and most of them are based on some of the very first cars Mattel made. I can't knock 'em and I would love to see Mattel bring them back again, in this format, without those rubber wheels I just plain don't like. If you've got kids or any kind of racing ambitions, look these up.
