Batman has been well-represented in Hot Wheels, with vehicles from the comics, movies, and some seemingly from nowhere but the designers' imaginations. The 2013 Batman Live Batmobile is a head-scratcher to a lot of people, because it's used in a live stage show and most people I know don't have kids that they take to these things. I had no intention of tracking it down, but it was at the store after lunch one day and I said "OK." That's how most of my Hot Wheels purchases are made - there are no action figures I want, and I've got a dollar to blow.
I've bought a few versions of Batman's car from over the years and this is the least substantial. I'm not saying it's bad, but compared to the designs in the Tim Burton movies, the classic TV show, or the meaty Nolan vehicles, this looks a heck of a lot more like a toy, which it is now, so that makes a lot of sense. The matte finish is a fairly subdued black and the original prop's wheels do indeed have blue, but they don't really match the actual thing. If you ever decide to look up the real deal, the wheels look more like clocks than tires which, admittedly, would look awesome on your wall.
For a 1:64 scale vehicle for a dollar this is good, goofy fun but nitpickers (or people who know what it's supposed to look at) will recognize the various fenders and proportions as being close, but not exactly the same as the genuine article. The only other toy I could find based on this design was sold at the live arena shows, and may well be the same car under a dust cover. It also will cost you more than a dollar.
As this kind of toy goes, it feels light and insubstantial. Other Batmobiles tend to be bulkier or glossier (or both), so this is mostly interesting because it's a wildly different take on one of the most famous fictional crime-fighting vehicles of all time. It feels like a car outside of its time and place, but traditionally the Batmobile does - where else do you see fins in the 21st century? As this was designed by a guy who worked on Formula One racers, the different take will probably serve toy dorks best as a firm reminder that there are a lot of different interpretations left to do for Bruce Wayne's signature vehicle. If you found this one late like I did, and you found it for a dollar, I bet you're going to enjoy it. I got the 2013 Matchbox Batmobile on the same trip to the store and I like that one slightly more.
