If you're into variants, the Hot Wheels Racer Verse Jack Skellington has a few - Mattel updates the single-carded packaging of the figure every year, and this is the second version. There's a debut version, and also a two-pack with Sally that came out later - I got this one in a case from work, so I probably won't wind up with Sally too.

This one tends to sell quickly when it shows up in a store - heck, a lot of these do. The "evergreen" characters like Spider-Man and some of the Disney people tend to go rather quickly, which is probably good for the future of this line's success with kids and toy fans. You don't want things to stick around much, and putting Jack in a 2-pack so they can sell more of them is a good idea. So far, all the Jack are pretty much the same. Only the packaging is significantly altered.

You get Jack in a car like his snowmobile from The Nightmare Before Christmas, which is a sensible choice. Mattel is probably in a weird position where it has to make a car out of another vehicle to make the brand work, and some are obvious choices while others are a little tougher to get right. Trading out snow tire tracks for wheels on this one got the job done, while keeping the white, green, yellow, and red coloring. (There are vestiges of the treads, though.)

Most of these cars have a driver with both hands molded on the wheel - you know, for safety. Jack Skellington has one hand in a "thwip" pose, not unlike your average toy reviewer eating a bag of free-dried apple chunks on a bicycle on the way home from lunch. The fingers are absolutely tiny, and you can see his index and pinky fingers extended while the other two are pointing back. At this scale, it feels like the kind of thing you don't see much. The car is round and friendly, with eye-shaped yellow headlights, painted red brake lights, and even a white license plate with a Hot Wheels swoosh on it. This is where your money is going - a typical car may leave off these details.

The figure looks great, given the size. His expression is determined, and he even has his bat bow-tie. The white stripes are gone - getting them to look right at this scale would be expensive and probably not look great - and his white hands are on a black steering wheel. The PVC figure is non-removable, and has a little "give" to it.

The metal base has some nice heft to it, and the plastic top looks nice. It has a sack of toys hanging on the back, plus a license plate frame with the familiar swoosh design. These cars seem like something that came from a lost video game, and it's a pretty nifty design that'll probably sell well between now and the time the line becomes unprofitable.

It's a nice toy for the price - granted, the collectible character toy space is pretty crowded, and Funko and Jun Planning and many other companies have made toys of this design, more or less. But this is the only one that can race on tracks, and that's arguably a good reason to get it. That, and it's cheap, and a toy, so it should be pretty durable. I like it. It's fun.
