I actually went around looking for this King Kuda. There are playing card themed Art Cars regularly inserted in these assortments, and the paint on them tends to be pretty good. If you look at most of the cars you had when you were a kid, and compare them to these... it's remarkable. The fine detail really looks great, and who doesn't like a muscle car?

The first King Kuda cars came out in 1970, when Spectraflame paint was still a thing. The photos look pretty stunning, but you know what they say - they don't make 'em like they used to. This has been retooled, but it looks very similar with the exposed engine. I like the chrome interior, I love the red wheels and windows, the chrome bumper looks cool... really, they just plain did a nice job. I didn't see this one on pegs much, and previous "card" cars always seemed to disappear quickly too.

It rolls nicely and seems like the kind of thing a toy collector with a gambling problem would absolutely love. Or someone who loves games, or someone who just likes really nice graphic design work. Nobody had to reinvent the wheel here as Mattel already had expertise adapting these designs to cars, and it's probably my action figure bias talking - but it is impressive.

I'm not a car guy, and my interest in Matchbox and Hot Wheels pretty much exists solely as "hey that looks cool" and I buy one. I kind of wish the action figure world could be more like this. If I see a car I like, I've got $1.25. I can buy two - I can afford that. $10 (or $20, or $50) for an action figure is increasingly expensive and I can't say that I find the increased articulation to have improved my experience in most cases. By keeping these toys simple for over 60 years, Mattel gets money from me and there's zero reason for me to shell out anything for them either. If you see it in a store, and it's a couple of bucks, this is one worth picking up. Having recognizable graphic art without paying someone a licensing fee is a tough task, and yet, here it is.
