A more recent car but one that's totally a mascot of Hot Wheels is their Bone Shaker. Now you can get one that turns into an Autobot. It's roughly the size of a Deluxe Autobot - a smaller one, but it's about that level of complexity - and it's similar to a number of Mattel's tiny cars with flames on black paint. I don't think it's an exact match, though.

Twin Mill's engineering feels a hair closer to Star Wars Transformers while Bone Shaker is closer to modern Age of the Primes toys. There are fewer oddly flat panels, but also the robot arms and legs kind of feel like they're getting in the way of each other. But man it looks cool, and if any part of you thinks it would be awesome to have some goofy hot rod with flames and skulls on it this may well be the best toy you can pick up. The Fallen doesn't have skulls!

As a collab toy it's pretty good, smaller and cheaper while retaining elements of the main line enough to fit in. It reminds me a bit of Hasbro's Generation 2 Laser Rods toys from the 1990s, minus the key light-up element. You instead get a novelty shifter knob/magic wand with an Autobot symbol and crossbones on it, which isn't a bad substitute. Given Twin Mill has flames, I wonder if this was a concession to Mattel to avoid bladed weapons or firearms on their toys.

Articulation is on par with modern toys, but it gets weird in spots. The car seats become the part of the feet with ankle tilts. They're hidden behind chunks of car, giving him feet that really, really don't look like typical Autobot boots. The wrists don't swivel, but they can hold the shifter just fine. You get swivel biceps, and a decent range of movement on pretty much every part of the toy. The neck moves nicely, the waist twists, it doesn't break any new ground but it's not disappointing.

Sculpting is clean and clear, with minimal baggage. It feels a lot like a modern interpretation of a 1980s toy that didn't exist - which is what you want. The car's grille becomes the chest. The head has a hint of a nose behind a mask, and a red visor with chrome pipes on the side of the helmet. There are vents, flames, and little bits and pieces of design flair that likely serve some purpose but just look like cool robo-bits to me. Thanks to his giant boots he has no problems standing, and depending on your shelf situation you might not see much more than his head and chest anyway. It's a stable toy with nice paint and it looks great. It might not be engineered the same as the main line, but it's getting closer and closer.

Transformation in both directions is fine. I would say it's pretty smooth and logical, but with a few extra tabs and bits locking in place that you don't normally see in the main line. It definitely feels like a different set of rules were put in puzzling these guys out, but it's not bad. It's just different. Nothing feels like it's going to explode or pop off either, which is really what I want to see in more of these toys.

The car is, unsurprisingly, a big Bone Shaker. The tires have no tread, so it's a lot like a bigger Hot Wheels toy. (Twin Mill has tread.) The wheels spin about as well as you'd expect, but there's not much else in the way of action features. You can put the shifter knob in position, which is delightfully goofy. If there's a separate storage position, I have yet to figure it out.

If you like what you see and want some new guys rather than remakes of remakes of remakes, this is a crossover I can recommend. I like Hot Wheels, and I like toy robots. It's not quite what I expected but the end results are worthwhile and if they can keep the prices around $30 it's comparable to other products in market right now. The magic wand is a little silly, but I admire them for trying something different. Crossover toys are kind of hit or miss, sometimes being a little too big to fit in with everything else, but these guys seem made to go with your other "classics" toys. I also really miss getting toys on cardbacks packaged in car mode - they should do that some more.
