I remember seeing a lot of the later figures, like Ecto-Glow Heroes Egon Spengler with Jail Jaw Ghost, as a kid. By 1991 I was no longer buying The Real Ghostbusters, mostly because as soon as it departed from the cartoon look I lost interest. I never got a Fearsome Flush, but I did wind up with a Boo-Zooka (with Boo-Lets) somehow. I was also knee-deep in collecting Star Wars from 1989-1991 because it was pretty cheap and, pre-internet, you basically had to be ready with the birthday money if something you want came on the market. I wasn't really buying the Fright Features or Slimed Heroes because I was - gasps - happy with the set of of regular characters I had at home. There was no real reason to keep going, and that generally held true until the mid-late 1990s when Kenner was doing a lot more new Star Wars costume changes.

What's funny is after Playmobil, I had no intention of buying any other Ghostbusters toys. But I also never even thought Hasbro would do this. I've certainly brought it up a few times (as I assume very fan has), and I'm glad someone over there eventually said "Hey, let's do it" to somebody else.

This line - even before the Ninja Turtles or Batman - really did a good job making a couple of new sets of the main guys every year. New action features were regularly brought in to keep kids buying new vehicles, new ghosts, and new monsters as well as new heroes and the occasional playset. In hindsight these kinds of changes and ideas were a lot cooler than they seemed at the time, because scraping up four, five, or six dollars for an action figure was kind of difficult. Heck, I even had to wait for a clearance sale to get my glowing Universal Monsters Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and I think those got down to a couple of dollars at that point.

Originally released in 1991, this 5 1/2-inch-ish figure is basically the original Egon figure with a few minor changes. The Proton Pack cable isn't on the bottom like the very first release, but instead comes out of the back. (I never liked that change.) It looks very similar to the original Ecto-Glow toy, but I don't have one so I can't tell. What I can tell you is that the details feel good, and it seems the wrinkles and creases mostly if not entirely made the move to the new figures. The glow plastic absorbs a lot of the detail, but at least it feels right. The glow plastic is nice and bright after brief exposure to the Sun, and it does OK with UV LEDs.

The paint is pretty good. Weirdly, the glowing mask Egon face looks more lively than his flesh one. The blue eyes are very pale and the fleshy paint doesn't do a lot to highlight many of his facial features. Both the mask and head have red glasses, but only the figure head has yellow hair. The sculpted detail on the mask loses a lot of head detail, and I have no idea how much it matches the genuine original toy from 1991. I really like the pink and green coloring, and the ridiculous "EGON" on his pants. If you collect toys of that era, this matches a lot of Transformers Generation 2 toys as well as Hot Wheels and Matchbox.

Egon's proton pack matches the original quite nicely, complete with a differently shaped neutrona stream. As with the originals, you can twirl the back and it makes the stream spin around. Simple, but effective. He has no problems wearing it, and it does not impact his balance. The wand also mounts on the back just like the originals.

He is joined by the Jail Jaw Ghost, which is molded in glow plastic with blue painted eyes. He looks great! I don't have an original so there are some minor imperfections that seem to also be on previous releases of the figure. He's cute, he's fun. I'd buy little ghosts like this in other colors if Hasbro made them.

I could probably write this same review of the entire line. The joints are good, but the legs are a little loose for a new figure. It feels like an old toy, it glows as good as I would hope for, the paint is generally good and it's not a bad set for the money. $20 per figure for a low-articulation glow guy is more than I pay in indie toy spaces. Adjusted for inflation it's not terribly cheap. But also, I've been watching the news. I'm glad Hasbro brought these back and I hope they continue making good reproductions of old 1980s rarities, like Yak Face in 2023 and hopefully Vlix some time before I no longer could enjoy it.
