My notes show that I ordered Ecto-Glow Classic Ghosts on November 3 and got them early in August. That's a long wait! I was super happy to see them do this, and a little less happy about the price. The previous set cost about $20 per figure, which I believe was higher than the painted retail sets, and certainly more expensive than the previously rereleased individually packaged ghosts. But it's also a limited release soft vinyl figure, and while not true sofubi I think Hasbro knows the audience for this is niche. And I like niche.
I loved Ghostbusters as a kid and had a few of the toys, but mostly avoided buying stuff as an adult minus a few Ecto-Glow items and some Playmobil. The original Kenner Marshmallow Man was one of my childhood favorites, and I love glow toys, so I just felt I had to get this. Was it a wise purchase? Probably not, I expect it'll go on sale. This is to say nothing of its quality, $47 for two Kenner figures is a chunk of money. Kenner never did Ecto-Glow big ghost figures back in the day, so this is a fun bit of nostalgia-adjacent toy development. I like these.

Stay-Puft is a resisue of a reissue. It lacks the copyright marks, texture, and foot peg hole of the original. I immediately noticed everything was smoother, the "skin" didn't have the hints of marshmallowy air texture to it plus everything seemed a bit more rounded off. The bow tie seems to have just a little less detail, and I don't know if it's a result of the scanning process, the tooling masters, or something else. The fingers aren't quite as sharply defined as candy marshmallow bits as the original figure either... but you'd never know that unless you owned the original. In and of itself, the Ecto-Glow Stay-Puft looks precisely what I would expect. Glow plastic tends to show a little less detail, and this one does.
The paint is pretty good. The blue on the collar misses the border in a few spots, but thanks to the glow plastic it isn't obvious and doesn't look bad. The mouth interior is changed from the original. My classic Kenner sample has a fully painted-in black mouth, while the new Ecto-Glow one only paints in the back. What's funny is that the original one looks and feels a little more like a cheaper, vintage smooth toy and my original feels like a slightly fancier collectible. Weird! I don't think anyone will find the minor changes to paint mask or materials to be too upsetting.
The figure has a rotating neck and shoulders, just like the original. My old one is a bit stiffer, but the new one moves fairly smoothly. The glow quality is excellent, seemingly matching Transformers New Legends Generation One Reissue Glow-in-the-Dark Green Lio Convoy Action Figure [FOTD #3,152] from this summer. Stay-Puft is a softer vinyl material while Lio Convoy is hard plastic, but the shine is impressive on both due to the large amount of glow plastic parts. When it comes to most glow figures, bigger is better with few exceptions. I charged it for a minute under the bright lights of a storage room, and then took it in the bathroom. I was able to make out light switches, the counter, the floor, all sorts of things in an otherwise completely dark room. From where I sit, that's as good as you can usually get with glow quality - once you can see the floor, you're doing great.
I never had an original Green Ghost, also known as Slimer, so this is my first impression of a 40-year-old toy design. The head and tail pieces are soft vinyl while the arms are PVC. Since I never played with one, I didn't know this guy had a swivel joint halfway down the body so the tail can hang down and "hover" like in the box, or trail behind him. I would have bought the original as a kid if I knew, instead I just got a Baggs [FOTD #483] as a better scaled stand-in as a kid. But I digress.
The texture of the plastic is pretty good - it's not as smooth as his companion, although the arms are pretty smooth. The body feels a lot like other soft vinyl figures, with no particular shine. It's pleasant. The orange eyes, purple mouth, orange teeth, and pink tongue react fairly well to UV light but do not glow themselves. Hasbro did a fantastic job applying thick, even layers of paint so no glow shines through. That's tough to do well, so I'm glad they spent the pennies to do it right. I don't really have any notes here - if this were a new-for-2026 toy I'd say "yeah, that seems about right."
The Green Ghost can't hold is glowing food accessories, which have red paint to bring out the detail. They're fine. If they left them out, I wouldn't miss them. They're warped in the packaging, but I'm afraid to do much to straighten them because I don't know how much stress the paint may take. As such, they'll just hang out behind the figure on a shelf somewhere.
Toys like this occupy a weird place where they're rereleases of old molds of very cheap toys, sold in new colors, at collector prices, but not as expensive as a kaiju sofubi figure. These would probably be $20ish or less at a Target, but instead they're $30ish each online. Such is life. Because Hasbro made Kenner molds in glow colors and I really enjoy getting weird glow-in-the-dark toys, I did not have a problem paying the price of admission. If a bootlegger made these guys for $60 or $100 each, I'd have skipped them but certainly lusted after them like the Ecto Glow Batman custom and other similar figures are fun but expensive. Hasbro's filling a niche desire, and the audience for this is old guys who love old toys. If that's you, I think you'll be happy with the quality of what they made.
