Hey, pixel toys! We don't get a lot of these in the USA, but we should. The 8-Bit Link is the kind of figure most people would say "I could sculpt that" and probably be right. It's a pixel-by-pixel recreation of the character at the start of the game with his non-magical shield, but that's what everybody probably remembers. Me, I pretty much always had the bigger shield.

Standing about 2 1/2-inches tall, Link turned out exactly like what you saw on your TV in 1987. The green is a little pale, but other than that it's the figure. He has bangs sculpted out, elongated shoes for improved balance, pointy ears, and an interesting cheat - the black backer of the figure has been extended for increased stability. One foot is completely off the ground, so the designers wisely elongated the backing piece to allow him the dignity of remaining upright.

Like many of Jakks' smaller World of Nintendo figures, it doesn't do anything - it's Link! In his green outfit! That's what it has to offer, and it delivers in spades. The only thing that could be cooler was if it were bigger. For $4, it's great - and I'm really happy this little figure is what we got rather than a $100 resin statue from another manufacturer. Japan has had a decent smattering of pixel plastic figures as magnets or cell phone charms, so getting something that's just there to stand on my desk and remind me that I was a lot happier in 1987 is an interesting change of gaming perspective. I didn't just like the first Zelda, it was my favorite game for years before being dethroned by Final Fantasy II.

This figure seems to be molded in green, flesh, brown, and black - there's no obvious signs of paint. The backside is a glossy, textured black plastic with copyright markings while the sides of the figure look like what you might expect from a block man. It would be awesome to see them make him fully three-dimensional like the Mario Amiibo, but it wasn't. You can also get all 4 NES figures for the price of an Amiibo, so that's another bonus selling point.

Your reaction to this figure should be one of utter joy - if knowing this figure exists makes you want to buy it, you absolutely should track it down. It's worth the four bucks. If you think the style is stupid, you should pass on it. It doesn't do anything, there are no moving parts, it's just a physical representation of one of the greatest games ever made. I hope Metroid gets similar love, and if Square-Enix does the same for Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy I'm going to have to cough up some serious cash. These are really wonderful and I'm in for as many as I can find at a fair price.
