If you played Super Mario 3D Land a couple of years back (and I did) or Super Mario Bros. 3 in 1990 (ditto), Tanooki Mario is a pretty big deal. In the original NES game, the suit not only looked like someone saw furry mascots coming, but it granted you the powers of a creature with giant testicles. In the original game, that means you could fly or turn into a statue for some reason. The newer game doesn't let you turn into a statue, but it is pretty cool. If you're wondering why I categorized this one as being from the new game and not the old one, it's his accessory - in the original game, the Super Leaf granted you a tail and ears - Raccoon powers. The Tanooki Suit was granted by a little suit icon. In Super Mario 3D Land, the costume is granted by the leaf. Since he includes the leaf, this is from the new game.

At about 4-inches tall, he's about the same height as the standard Mario, but his hands are a little wider and he seems to be a tiny bit more portly. Maybe it's just the costume. The deco is pretty good, but you'll notice a little slop around the ears, hat bill, and on the tail stripes. It's not perfect - but the eyes are a little brighter than the previous Marios, and the eyes are a little smaller. Heck, even the face is different - the nose seems to be integrated much more cleanly, and Mario's mouth is closed rather than open like the other ones.

Articulation is actually a little worse than the regular Mario figure I got a while ago. If you need jointed wrists, mine both seem stuck - I don't want to break him, so I'm not going to force it. The range of motion on the neck was improved slightly, and the tail is really superb - it rotates and works as a prop to keep him in action poses. I really like it. The shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees are all articulated to bring your joint grand total to 10 points. I'm having a lot of fun with it, even if the joints are a little bit of an eyesore.

The leaf is pretty awesome - it's the only accessory in the set, and it can't stand up. Or be held. I appreciate that it exists, but I'm left wondering what it is I'm supposed to do with it. The front of this brown accessory has light brown stripes and painted eyes, making it the most adorable plastic piece of dead plant life you may ever see. The flip side is unpainted. It's a skinny little thing, and I really wish it had a clear stand or a base of some sort. I assume it will get lost or end up in your junk drawer, even though the paint job is top-notch and first-rate.

While not perfect, this is a great and fun figure. I almost wish it was a little bit better like a Figma, just so they could give him a display stand to "fly" or some such. I like how the tail props him up, and the suit seems to be consistent with its design in both games. As such, I'm pretty happy with it - it'd have been nice if he came with a little icon of the suit from the original appearance, though. Heck, it'd be nice to have a little PVC figure of the statue mode, too. For $10, this is a pretty fantastic figure and I feel like I got my money's worth. I wouldn't be surprised if he took up residence on my desk for a while. This is a good one.
