I spent months - months - looking for Metroid Gravity Suit Samus. The assortment hit Walgreens and Target and Toys R Us late last year but got picked clean rather quickly in Phoenix, so while I did find Tanooki Mario [FOTD #1,380] I didn't find Samus until March. At CVS. For $15. It turns out the chain had been getting cases of this wave and selling absolutely none of them - the lady at the counter told me they sat there unsold for a month, and as I do not haunt drug stores I had no idea it was across from a place I go for lunch every week. This is Jakks Pacific's third shot at this mold, and I have them all, because that's how much I like old Metroid. I don't even like the Prime games, I'm just that big of a fan of the 2D ones.

The original Samus [FOTD #1,162] is pretty much the same as this one, but in different colors. At about 4 3/5-inches tall, Samus sports the exact same 18 joints and the same "secret" accessory. Along with Mario, this is probably the second-most repainted mold in the line - it's good, but it sort of has to be. You can't get away with chunky joints on a bulky-but-skinny figure like this one.

She's nice! But not perfect. Color-matching paint and plastic is difficult, and the only company I see doing a great job with it is Onell Design. Little things can cause problems, like painting a really light color paint over a really dark color of plastic - the purple legs do not help the yellow paint. You can see it was applied somewhat thinly, and the torso has a hint of orange that the legs do not. The light blue does not suffer this indignity, with the color applied to her visor, chest, shoulders, and legs with no real inconsistency.

The purple morph ball is here too - although at this point it's rather pointless to call it a "secret" accessory if it's just a redeco. Perhaps there's some psychological factor to the blind box element, but it's not like you're going to get something like a Zoomer in there. (Although that would be cool.) It's a perfectly nice extra, but I wouldn't miss it were it absent - it's not like Link's shield. Samus doesn't have a signature accessory, so this is really the best option for the token "better than nothing" extra.

Samus has the same range of motion and feel as her predecessors, with a purple color that, while cool and even in Super Metroid, is hardly essential. Samus is orange or red to most of us, and that's good enough for me. However Metroid is to Mario what Indiana Jones is to Star Wars, so I buy the toys when I see them. Every Metroid toy released outside Japan would probably fill a decent sized shoebox, so it's a solemn duty for me to track these down. I'm sure a metallic one would look better, and hopefully Jakks made enough money off this version to give us an NES or GameBoy-inspired model next. (Or better yet, some aliens.) Get it if your budget allows, because it's superb for a $10 Samus. $15, I feel a little dumb paying that - but it's Metroid, and after 3-4 months I'm generally more agreeable (desperate) to pay a higher asking price.
