A fun way to see how old/hardcore someone may be is to show them the little white squid from the Super Mario games. Currently, it's a Blooper - a strange name, but it used to be a Bloober, which I thought made more sense because a blooper is a blunder and a bloober is, I think, a nonsense word. I'm not going to check Urban Dictionary to find out if it means something else. I'm just guessing it involves a balloon and it gets real messy real fast.

Standing about 3-inches tall, Blooper has a clear display stand and does absolutely nothing. It's a hard plastic collectible figure, and it can rest atop its clear colorless stand. That's it. I got mine for four bucks, but some stores charge as much as $7 for these guys. I might've paid it, because Blooper, but rest assured you can do nearly everything one can do with this toy without actually opening the packaging.

There's not much detail on this cute little squid, as it has white plastic with no textures of any kind. There are elements which are raised a bit, and some curved buts, but it's not like there's much special here. A recessed eye mask is painted black with white circles to represent its eyes, giving you a pretty exact replica of the creature that first starred in a video game over 30 years ago as a block of a few pixels.

It can't grip the stand like the Metroid [FOTD #1,537], so if you pick the figure up off a flat surface the stand will remain. I'm not crazy about that. It'd be nice if the plastic was just a bit more grippy, I'd like to not easily lose the one, small, easily misplaced bit in the set.

This is a cheap figure. I mean that. For $4, it's fantastic - when you get right down to it, this could have just as easily been made as a kid's meal toy at a fast food eatery. I've had Burger King, McDonald's, and even Sonic prizes that are about as good - and those included food. Because of its feature-free format, and the fact that Hasbro sells tiny Transformers with a whopping five modes for about the same price, this would be a piece for collectors and hardcore fans only. And yes, I'm enough of a sucker/fan to buy an 8-bit pixel version should Jakks Pacific ever go that route.
