Despite effectively being the Disney of video games, there aren't a lot of huge stars in the Nitnendo stable - well, in some respects that's a lot like Disney. Their "Steamboat Willie" is brought to life with 8-Bit Donkey Kong, a pixel-by-pixel replica of the NES sprite (which is different than the original arcade sprite) of his "throwing down" animation - so when he tosses barrels toward the bottom of the screen, after he lets go, that's what this is.

This is easily the most massive figure in the 8-bit range to date, and it answers a question I've been having - how will Jakks handle bigger sprites? Donkey Kong is a much more pixel-intensive creation on the screen, yet this figure remains 2 1/2-inches tall (and much wider). In short, this figure was sculpted at a higher resolution than the other ones - this allows Jakks to keep it in the existing packaging footprint, rather than putting it in larger ($10) packaging. Granted, I'd almost rather we got a scaled-up one so I could make a diorama some day, but perhaps Jakks will do something like that later and include a be-hammered Mario.

While the other figures in this line rely mostly on molded plastic of various colors, Donkey Kong has a few painted parts. He's still mostly molded in tan, white, brown, and black, but you'll notice a few pixels between his legs are painted - and at least on my sample, not painted too cleanly. Aside from that things came together well - as odd as this is to say, you'll want to examine this gorilla's crotch before making a purchase. Everything else seems foolproof.

Like the others, some dimensional heft has been added to the pixel figure - his feet are wider, and various parts of his physique stand out a bit. He still has a flat back, but the hairless parts of his body are mostly sticking out a bit with the face jutting out a lot compared to the rest of his head - truth be told, it's a little strange.

While it's not perfect, it's $4 - it's not going to be perfect. It's a fairly hefty piece of light plastic, and it's bigger and arguably better than anything you might get out of a similarly sized blind box. The scale issues are a bit of a concern, but given the size of the line now - 4 regular figures and a handful of exclusives - I'm not worried yet.
