One of the unfortunate things about Jakks Pacific's World of Nintendo line is that there's not a very big distinction between "accessory" and "figure." Coming in at pretty much the same size as a Super Mushroom, the little Goomba is functionally similar save for having but one point of articulation. The body can twist freely, but aside from that it's basically just a plastic mushroom. Admittedly a beloved, familiar, and evil mushroom, but a mushroom all the same.

There's a taller version, but I had to go small - one it was more common, and two it was cheaper. The tiny Goomba is not exactly a miniature, but it's under 2-inches tall. He stands perfectly, and the design is in line with his more modern appearances - which aren't too far removed from the original Super Mario Bros.

The eyes, colors, feet, and eyebrows were pretty much there from day one, while the teeth got added for Super Mario Bros. 3 - of course, the design kept getting refined until its current incarnation, which is what you see here. Molded in brown, the figure is painted with even more brown and some great white paint applications for the eyes and teeth. It's tough to get white right on a darker color of plastic, but Jakks did it and they deserve credit for that.

This could have been sold as an accessory or an even cheaper PVC or blind bag figure, but instead it's $4-$7 depending on your mass marketer of choice. I'd say it's worth the $5 or so easily - these little guys always are - just be prepared for it to not do much of anything. It's tiny, it's cute, it looks on-model - that's all you can ask for. Well, I guess you could also ask for them to include an 8-bit pixel version at no extra charge, but I assume they realize that's not going to help business any. If you see it and like how it looks, it's worth picking up. And if it's over retail price, keep in mind there are other manufacturers making similarly sized toys in larger accessory sets that, over time, maybe be a better value. But today, the single Goomba is the way to go.
