Despite being the title character of a video game series that has been around for 29 years, I can probably count the number of licensed Metroid toys I have seen on one hand. A really big Metroid [FOTD #1,125] hit in 2015, but was pretty hard to find. This new one will likely also be hard to find, as the assortments of 2 1/2-inch scale figures come and go fast - and the non-Mario ones come in differently colored packagings so you'll immediately see them stand out against the sea of red. I was actually going to buy a whole case of this wave to ensure I got the Metroid, but I lucked into one at the store for $7. So. Here we are.

Standing about 2-inches tall, the Metroid has no moving parts and is basically just a scaled-down version of last year's model. It's sort of like a baby Metroid, or one scaled to the mini-figure line's various heroes and villains. He has the big fangs coming down from the body, which is red with the usual painted highlights under a green, flexible membrane. It looks good - deco is clean and clear, and the colors more or less match what they should. It's not the rounded body I've come to know from the classic 2D games, as it's a little more smooshed. It should probably look a smidgen more like a mushroom, but at least the basic colors and form are present.

It can stand on its teeth, or you can pop it on a clear display stand - which is basically invisible thanks to being cast in clear plastic. Don't throw it away! It's a very small stand so it's just there to hover off the flat surface by the tiniest of margins. If you want it to float as high as a figure's head, you're going to need to customize something - but this does fit perfectly, and it's not at all obtrusive.

As I mentioned above, this once-$4 assortment was $7 when I found one at Toys R Us - as such, it might cost you a bit more than you'd like to pay for a figure of this size. It's nice, and because it's a Metroid I bought it, but that places it at about the same price as a 3 3/4-inch Star Wars figure or a little more than the smaller Transformers available today. If you're a fan of 1980s space toys, retro video games, and strangely shaped creature toys, I expect you to buy it regardless of the price. It does sting a bit that the giant Metroid - which is, by comparison, huge - was only $15.
