I was pretty stoked to see this Shy Guy, because I thought it was a non-articulated figure for $4. I was wrong - he actually has three points of articulation, making it one of the best values of the year for action figures.

Standing about 2-inches tall, Shy Guy turned out to be much better than I had anticipated - his arms swivel, and his waist turns. I expected no articulation. Fully realized in 3-D, he looks more or less exactly what I hoped for when I saw them in Super Mario Bros. 2 nearly 27 years ago. Sure, this one has better posture and a waist, but it's the Shy Guy you've come to know, and love, and to pick up and toss over a waterfall.

The mask is nice and round, and so are the shoes. The feet can't move individually, but you can twist them around at the figure's waist. Each arm rotates so it can look like his flipper-like hands are waving, and I'll be honest, I never really considered the hands to be digit-free flippers before now. He has no problems standing, even on my older (not paper-thin) flat-panel monitors. It's a pretty good addition to my slowly-growing Nintendo collection.

As a character from the lesser-trod corners of the Mushroom Kingdom and Sub-Con, it's great to see this guy as a toy. I mean, I don't think we've got Kuribo's Shoe or a lot of characters outside of plush, so this sort of thing is nice to actually have. The little mouth and cleanly-applied paint apps show that Jakks has really upped its game in the last few months, so at least I didn't have to worry about squinting to find the best-painted figure here.

This figure, for the price, is the current definition of amazing. Where else can you get a decent, articulated action figure for four bucks outside of a blind bag? There are limits to what you can do for a figure of this size, but Jakks did a good job embracing the license and this format. I can't imagine these will stay $4 if they remain at this level of quality, so all I can say is enjoy them while they last. I'm sure they'll be $5.99 within the next two years.
