While a Samus figure started showing up in stores last February, this metallic version was part of a subscription box program sold by Wizard's ComicConBox.com program - $29.99 gets you a box of junk you probably don't want or need, and they baited the hook with this figure and an exclusive Star Wars comic book. While there's no shortage of toys from a galaxy far, far away I can't find new Metroid stuff to find, so I signed up for the devil that is a subscription box for one month and canceled after this one shipped. The box was pretty good, but let's not kid ourselves - this is why I bought the box.

Jakks' "Exclusive Metallic Paint / einture Metallique Unique" Metroid Samus is very close to the regular version, but it's slathered in paint. Seriously, it's almost as good as the Amiibo - certain details are left undecorated, but the coloring matches pretty closely. The red parts are rather, sadly, flat - more candylike than her predecessor, but still not glittery enough. The visor is a little darker, and the tubes on her helmet are black for some reason. Other Samus figures are usually grey or silver - so it's a little off, but still, quite cool.

At 4.6-inches tall, she's tall and has the same (basically good) articulation. With the improved deco, she's a clear and obvious improvement over every American Samus figure so far - minus the Amiibo, anyway. If you want an articulated Samus toy and don't want to spend Figma money, this is still your best bet. It's an argument for premium decoration on a regular figure, because it's sickeningly better than the one I bought at Target early last year.

The green of the arm is even better than the Amiibo, and the armor seems more or less on the mark. I found myself forgetting she lacked an articulated wrist, but that wasn't enough to harsh my buzz on having this figure in my hands. The red dot in the cannon really makes it, and the metallic coloring seems to be applied more cleanly than her cheaper, mass-retail counterpart. Dynamite.

Her Maru Mari / Morph Ball accessory is the same as before, but with the new paint of this special release. I'm not impressed by it - it's still hollow and light, lacking in genuinely great detail. It looks more or less like the ball in the games, but its lack of interaction with the larger figure - and the fact it's not heavy enough to sit still - is kind of irksome. A Metroid hatchling, a Zoomer, a Ripper, or some other enemy monster would have been a real coup. As it is, it's just OK. It's better than no accessory, but its absence would have likely raised no complaints. The real gem is the main Samus Aran figure.

While frustratingly locked away inside the halls of Wizard's unique marketing machine, a standard Samus figure would set you back about $20-$30 before shipping - so their offer of a $30 premium version boxed with a t-shirt, earbuds, comic books, and some other junk you'll throw in the trash isn't exactly a terrible deal. The problem is, usually, the question on if you really want any of this junk - in my case, I barely got my money's worth - I needed new earbuds, while I'm not stoked to get Kylo Ren ones instead of something more subtle I'll take 'em. On eBay this Samus will likely set you back at least $20 as well, and I'd say she's 100% worth it - get this version over the standard one if you can. Completists, the Gravity Suit Samus is in production now too - keep a look out for that at your favorite stores.

Note: This is the box - Samus is also included. The cost was $29.99 plus $9 shipping, so effectively $40. I've seen various sites rate these in terms of market value, a tough metric to agree with given that I wouldn't buy half of this stuff. The shirt quality seems decent, the comics are legit comics, the earbuds are pretty good, but mostly I'm just irate the shipping wasn't lower. It did not inspire me to keep the subscription, but if this (or other) box services promote a hot toy before the sign-up period ends I'll absolutely try them again.

Just for the sake of mentioning it, the Kylo Ren earbuds both read "R" - so either they got a deal because of a factory error, or I just got lucky. How did yours turn out?
