I heard whispers of Walgreens repaints, which sort of made me cringe - mainly because I found 8-Bit Star Power Mario in mid-April, after they started showing up on eBay late in 2015. It's a long wait and a lot of people sold these figures for vast sums of money despite a $4.99 price tag. It's basically the same figure as 8-Bit Mario [FOTD #1,349] but with a shiny prismatic finish that will show every last fingerprint.

Standing about 2 1/2-inches tall, the figure has the same great dimension and retro feel as the original figure. The shiny paint really highlights the edges and brings out detail in ways you amy not necessarily expect, like a green or yellow edge on each corner. The reds are deeper, the flesh is about the same, and the brown is slightly richer here in my office. If the light hits it just right, the whole thing lights up in a rainbow look which may remind you of giant glycerin soap bubbles.

The fine line between statue and figure rears its head here, because it doesn't do anything but look cool. It's all about light - it's a pretty figure that is going to look awful as your greasy meat paws dirty it up. I'd love to see this kind of finish applied to other toys and see how it turns out, simply because I own a lot of toys - a lot of toys - and don't have anything else that looks quite like this. That takes some doing, so kudos to Jakks for accomplishing this feat.

For me there's a big question lingering over this one - "Was it worth the effort?" I had to stomp through dozens of Walgreens stores multiple times a week for months. Months. I didn't make any special trips, but when I was out for lunch or errands and I saw a Walgreens, I went in. Friends knew to go looking too. I wasted the time of many people to get these dumb things, rather than pay extraordinary mark-ups on eBay. (I have very tolerant, forgiving, and generally accepting associates.) If I just stumbled on this guy for $5, I'd have happily bought one due to the novelty. I was hoping I'd find more than one so I could send one to another friend as a surprise. I have no idea how sturdy this shiny finish will be but I'd absolutely love it applied to transforming robot toys, just to see how it looks. For now, though, this is probably going to move in on my desk and look cool until I get worried about dust.
