If you like Metroid, you owe it to yourself to pick up a Samus toy. But not necessarily this one.

Standing about 3 1/4-inches tall, Samus has great deco and a good sculpt - with poor articulation and a wonky pose. Getting her to stand is a challenge, and may require application of heat to the legs so gravity doesn't take her down. The hips seem to be separate pieces and I can't tell if they're jointed or glued in place - so I'm not going to try and break her, at least not until I find another one. Her arms and waist are definitely jointed, with the neck as a maybe - I can't get mine to move and I don't want to tear it off. The little guys tend to not move as much, so 3 joints isn't an unreasonable expectation for such a thing.

Detailing is par for the course, with paint making up for any shortfalls. The panel line detailing isn't perfect, but it's good - but more importantly, it's present. That sort of thing usually gets cut, so it's nice to see some black lines and body suit bits under the metallic orange, yellow, red, and green. They even added some orange tho the glowing green gun arm, and just as far as paint goes you're probably getting your money's worth with this as a packaged figure. It's pretty - and it's cheaper than the Amiibo you can't find.

So what could go wrong? The pose is a little silly - it looks like something from a cutscene, and it's a pose I assume a normal person would not consider when in a fight against aliens of death. The cardback has a nice - if sensible - pose that would be perfect for standing around. This pose - with a bent foot and arms spread out - requires some careful balancing to keep her upright. So far she's standing pretty well, but it'd be nice if a fight was not a prerequisite, or if I could actually change the pose in a meaningful way. At this price it is not expected, so I'd just say that this is the finest $5 Samus money can buy.

This is a cheap figure - for five bucks, it's OK. However, it's like a lot of other toy lines where the gulf between the $5 toy and the $10 toy is pretty steep - the only reason to get this one is if you can't get one of the bigger ones. The Wizard/Comiccon Box exclusive Samus [FOTD #1,347] was going for $15 on Amazon around the time I wrote this, and that's easily as good as three of this figure. I hope we see more creatures from this game at this scale - perhaps a regular, rounder Metroid or a Zoomer or a Ripper would be nice - as so far 4 of the 5 Metroid toys Jakks delivered are all Samus. And I like Samus. But it's samey. It wouldn't surprise me if we saw this mold redecorated once or twice either.
