I don't know why, but this 8-Bit Toad Variant proved particularly difficult to find - the Boo and the Squid were around, but it took me a long while to spot this one. I bet it being a new-to-most-people mold helped.

There's a sticker right on the packaging indicating that it is exclusive, and the packaging's bio seems to indicate it was intended to represent his powers from Super Mario Bros. 2. Toad wasn't nearly as colorful in that game, as he was pretty much blue, white, and flesh color. Minus the yellow trim, that makes this 2017 figure similar to the Super NES version of Toad on Super Mario All-Stars. Also the shoes are a little different. Okay, let's be honest, this is just a modern deco of 8-Bit Toad.

This particular color looks a lot better than the original, which always weirded me out. I often saw the vest as a bizarre mouth frowning, and it looks a lot more like a proper vest here. The white pants look sort of like a diaper, and most of the color is clean and even. The sole exception can be found on the yellow trim - it's a little scuffed in spots. Your samples may vary, so if you're lucky enough to find one, be sure to take a close look prior to purchase and/or compare it to the other ones you'll find.

It looks like the standard deco 8-Bit Toad [FOTD #1,668] may have hit after the variant. The original toy came in standard NES Super Mario Bros. colors, while Walgreens' version has brown shoes and a blue vest with yellow trim. This matches the Amiibo and most modern representations. Of the two versions, I prefer this one. It's sharper, more colorful, and just looks nice. Authenticity has its place, but I can totally see why they wanted to try a snazzy set of colors on this mold. It worked on Mario! ...which I still can't find. For five bucks, it's perfectly nice - but if it was a blind bagged toy, you'd probably cringe at paying more than $3. It's basically just a statue or a magnet-free magnet.
